Sorry? But who's rights are being trampled by legalised prostitution?

The prostitute is allowed to sell her (or his) services and the client is able to have the freedom to go out and pay for no-commitment gratification. There are a good many problems that surround prostitution but I think that is more of a correlatation than a direct causation.

Having an open sex industry is good, if you keep it illegal then it is only going to be run by criminals and sex workers have much fewer protections.

Sex + Free Market =

Why would they be on the corners if it was legal?

Yes, legalize it. Then the prostitutes won't get busted and they can do it above board, so to speak. They won't have to hide, it's been around forever, why not?

do you see guys bootlegging moonshine on your street corner?

the legalization of prostitution doesn't mean that it would make what street walkers and pimps do legal. it means that the sale of sexual acts would be legal, regulated, and it would, in fact, bring it off the streets, effectively putting the criminal element of prostitution out of business.

I actually tend to agree. I think the reason many of us don't want prositution legalized is that by keeping it illegal we are somehow showing our Official Societal Disapproval of prostitution. Of course there are other things that we disapprove of in our society that are not illegal such as adultery and (for some of us anyway) smoking and drinking alcohol.

To me when we argue, "we can't have this be legal otherwise everyone will do it," we reveal the shaky foundation on which our sense of morality stands.
