Not necessarily on that front. Coast Guard HH-60 Jayhaks and HH-65 Dolphins have required maintenance & service ground time per flight hours. The humans who crew them do as well. No different than the Governor standing with a group of Louisiana National Guard members, or the Mayor standing with a group of NOPD offices.

There are so many threads going on about Katrina and the response right now, I'm not sure if this is the right thread to post this or not, but ...

... bureaucracy (or just mind-boggling misuse of resources?) at its finest:

Guess what the firefighters are doing?

After reading the last paragraph, I'm so angry again that I have to turn off the TV and turn my back on the internet.

Political correctness and sensitivity training have their place, especially for first responders, but doesn't the extreme need of this crisis warrant an expedited response? Couldn't they skip the workshops just this one time? Public relations should be left to FEMA field agents. At least the two suburban fire departments near me got down before that policy got implemented. We've already seen a Pelham fire truck on TV.

So not only is FEMA under Homeland Security, but it is also under the Department of Political Correctness?

Corianderstem, you should probably call them "fire negotiators" instead of "firefighters." That "fighters" bit sounds too violent, especially for what they'll be doing.

Heh. Thanks for the chuckle, I needed that. (I'm so lame - I'm incapable of shutting my computer off ... but at least I turned my TV off!)

One of our employees is a volunteer firefigh.... er, fire negotiater in Oregon, and she was called up by FEMA to go and help. She had to purchase her own supplies, which I thought was odd. I hope she actually gets to do some good down there, rather than hand out government fliers.

Wonder what people are going to hear when they call that number?
Really..somebody on here should call that number just for the hell of it and see what they get. This is so FEMA people can't be blamed by courts for screwing victims. Bush covering his ass already, at the local level. Amazing what the man can do when he puts his mind to it.

(Comment below to be read in one's own head in Adam's Posh Voice)

"You've reached the offices of the Federal Emergency Management Bureau. I'm sorry, but we're closed for lunch. If you're a southern city currently currently facing complete devastation, please leave the name of your city after the beep, and someone will return your call as soon as possible. Thank you!"

here he goes again..

"I mean, you have people who don't heed those warnings and then put people at risk as a result of not heeding those warnings. There may be a need to look at tougher penalties on those who decide to ride it out and understand that there are consequences to not leaving.” –Sen. Rick Santorum (R-PA), Sept. 6, 2005

Penalties on the people who are suffering and dying? Because they weren't rich enough to buy a way out or to hop in their cars and drive out? wow. That really blows the mind. Compassionate conservativism at its oxymoronic best.

My thoughts exactly.

I find it very shocking and sad that senior US politicians have so little understanding of what life is like for those less fortunate than themselves that they are able to make such inaccurate assumptions and inappropriate criticism of those who were stuck in New Orleans.

His remarks were sharply criticized by the campaign of Democrat Bob Casey Jr., who is seeking to unseat Santorum, the No. 3 Republican in the Senate.

That link that MrsSpringsteen posted is a link to my hometown newspaper! I'm kind of psyched about that.

I've been saying for YEARS that Santorum is an embarrassment to Pennsylvania. Fortunately, I think PA voters are on to him. I would love to see Robert Casey unseat him next year.

Who made those decisions, in your opinion?

A CNN/USA Today/Gallup poll of 609 adults taken September 5-6 shows:

Blame Game -- 13% said George W. Bush is "most responsible for the problems in New Orleans after the hurricane"; 18% said "federal agencies"; 25% said "state and local officials"; 38% said "no one is to blame"; 6% had no opinion. -- 29% said that "top officials in the federal agencies responsible for handling emergencies should be fired"; 63% said they should not; 8% had no opinion.

Here's a link to a BBC article asking for donations for the US. The comments are an example of what the world thinks.
