well, first i bought achtung baby, then zooropa on tape. but then, i moved onto cds. i'm boring. i bought them in order, boy through zooropa. pop hadn't been released yet. i didn't buy passengers until 98 or 99 cuz i didn't even know it existed until i started going online!

if you think about it, how would i have? passengers isn't usually with U2 in the cd sections (at least not in shops here), and most stores here don't carry it anyway. plus, i wasn't into reading music mags back then. also, my copy of the rolling stone encyclopedia or whatever that came out in 1995 said U2 were working on "an album of mostly instrumentals, and a rock and roll album." i didn't know the mostly instrumentals album = passengers until later, since they didn't say it would be under a different name. but anyway...

so i guess excluding passengers, everything else i've bought in order. i like to do that with bands, buy and listen to everything in chronological order. it gives me a better idea of how the band's progressed over the years. you don't read a book all out of order, so i try not to listen to the chapters of an artist all out of order either.

I didn't buy Passengers until 99 either, although I knew it existed - Miss Sarajevo was heavily played on the radio in Ireland in the run up to Christmas 95, plus I read a fairly positive review in Q magazine on the release of the album. The reason I waited so long before buying in it was that I wasn't really interested in that type of music back then (although I am now).

I'm really glad I got the whole back catalog before the new records, before U2 got 'in' again. I feel like it enabled me to have a deeper love for the music, in that I didn't discover U2 just because Beautiful Day was played a million-and-one times.

And only Atomic Bomb was listened to with having heard/read reviews/opinions of it.

I got to listen to their other albums with little, or no outside opinions influencing each album. I did see a VH1 documentary about U2, their career, but I didn't really hear or read anything else, save Achtung Baby.

I did have one person in a chatroom highly recommend Achtung Baby.

Erm the whole U2 thing went off for me when I bought Go Home! after having a Best Buy certificate and being determined to buy something by a band I didn't have anything of.

So after that...I was hooked. The order of the albums, then:

2. Best of 90-00
3. Achtung Baby
4. All That You Can't...
