Good thread, but extremely difficult to make a list of all the second rate songs.....especially if, as i agree with Jick here, about 80% of songs are second rate..

1st rate is reserved for out of control, gloria, new years day, unforgettable fire, pride, promenade, streets, WOWY, in gods country, red hill mining town, heartland, desire, the fly, one, zoo station, zooropa, discotheque, please, beautiful day, yahweh, city of blinding lights......songs like that...

3rd rate... scarlet, red light, 40(album version), wire, trip through your wires, exit, love rescue me, hawkmoon269, first time, if god will send his angels, playboy mansion, grace, ...songs like that...

Second Rate is, in my opinion only, basically the songs i havent mentioned i suppose....but its all a matter of opinion here...the only way of really finding out would be to have some kind of systematic plan where all opinions are taken into consideration and a massive chart is created to show whats rated where..

ALBUMS in my opinion:

1ST RATE

Achtung Baby (creative peak)
Joshua Tree (U2 = modern shakespeare)
How to Dismantle an Atomic Bomb (all about being brilliant)
Boy (wish all bands could debut like this)
Unforgettable Fire (an album for all occasions)
PoP (splendidly creative and ambitious)

2ND RATE

October (fresh)
Zooropa (Progressive)
War (cunning and exuberant)
ATYCLB (unadventurous yet impressionable)

3RD RATE

Rattle and Hum (pretentious and incoherent)

Aardvark, just for listing Luminous Times in your second rate playlist, I am now forced to - not kill you, but it won't be pleasant.

Anything off zooropa or pop is hard to listen to after being spoilt by the quality of Joshua tree.
Songs I will neve listen to again , Lemon, Numb, The fly and discotechque

Damn. Incredible. Maybe only with the exception of Boy, I totally agree with you here.

I don't think that U2 songs and albums can really be catergorized like this. They are all part of different era of the bands evolution. Without the the first few albums there never would have been a UF or JT. Concurrently with out UF and JT you would never get an AB and so on. There isn't 1st tier and 2nd tier, they are completely different catergories. They all have thier goods and bads

this thread can stay open for now i suppose but the second it turns into a "bring back jick" campaign again or anything it's gonna have to close.

please stay on topic.

U2 second rate, I think U2 songs are in a league of there own,
Classic U2- 10 Out of Control, SBS, UF, Pride, Beautiful Day, One, Where the Streets have No Name
Brillant U2- 9 Walk On, The Fly, Stay, Vertigo, New Years Day, Bad
Great U2- 8 I Will Follow, SYCMIOYO, Miracle Drug, Surrender
Very Good U2- 7 40, Gloria, The Refugee, Kite, Party Girl, Staring At the Sun
Good U2- 6 October, Fire, One Step Closer, Sweetest Thing
Average U2- 5 Grace, NASOTR, LWTSH, IGWSHA

To convert these from u2 ratings tonormal ratings add 2.
Below average U2, wait there is no such thing

BRING BACK JICK.
It's just hard to divide in 3 or 4 groups, you mus tdivide songs in at least 10 groups, then it would be ok.
But jick was talking about song that you don't not listen at all, but you don't listen them always.
List: I will Follow, October, 2 hearts, A sort of a homecoming, In God's Country, Zoo Station, van Diemen's Land, Numb, Miami, In a little while, Love and Peace

madroseka, i'm not sure if you're purposely doing this or not, but you've been bumping quite a few inflammatory threads. i'm not sure if you're trying to get a rise out of people or not but this is against the rules. you might want to check out the faq and familiarize yourself with what is and isn't okay.

thanks!
