In the UK charts:

All that you can't leave behind rises 17 places to #54 in the album charts.

Walk On drops 25 places to #52 in only its third week, thus showing this song was not going to be a hit but for the many U2 fans in the UK who gave it a #5 debut.

That #5 ranking for "Walk On" though gives U2 four top 5 releases in the U.K., which supercedes all of U2's prior success in the U.K.

Below are how some songs faired on the U.K. charts:

Beautiful Day: #1
Stuck in a Moment You Can?t Get Out Of: #2
Walk On: #5
Elevation: #3

With or Without You: #4
I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For: #6
Where the Streets Have No Name: #4
In God's Country: #48(U.S. import)

The Fly: #1
Mysterious Ways: #13
One: #7
Even Better Than the Real Thing: #12
Who's Gonna Ride Your Wild Horses: #14

Discotheque: #1
Staring at the Sun: #3
Last Night on Earth: #10
Please: #7
If God Will Send His Angels: #12

Note that even in U2's supposed "super hey-day" of the JT and AB eras, that they failed to have four singles chart in the top 5 in the U.K. Therefore, while "Walk On" may be falling fast, that #5 ranking created a new first for U2!

Congrats to U2!

Week 58 in the USA

Albums:
ATYCLB drops in sales but rises two positions to #76

Singles:
In the Hot 100, Stuck In A Moment drops 8 positions to #73. In the Adult chart it remains at #9 but loses its golden background, thus showing it's about to decline for good.

Videos:
In the Music Video chart, the Elevation 2001 Live in Boston makes its debut at #3. The biggest debut is in #1 also featuring U2, America a Tribute to heroes, while Britney's The Videos drops from the top to #2.

Hello,

What is happening with this thread? It is already Thursday and I'm only the fourth person posting here? OK, ATYCLB is now 58 weeks old, but it didn't disappear from all other charts besides UK, US and NL? Yep, there is some good news to tell about ATYCLB as it charts for another week here in the Netherlands. Here are the positions from the Dutch charts, courtesy of the Mega Top 100 (http://web.planet.nl/music/charts/megatop100/)
The past few weeks were a bit awkward. ATYCLB was dropping rapidly on the charts. Thankfully, the trend has turned. The album rises 16 positions to #65. Not bad for such an old album! Walk On might have done the trick and there was a holiday last week. Either way, I'm happy that the album at least stayed on the charts and I'm double happy the album has actually risen on the chart.
The total run of ATYCLB so far is:
1-1-1-1-1-3-3-3-6-7
6-5-7-6-6-6-5-6-1-2
8-12-16-25-30-36-38-40-45-48
49-43-39-39-45-42-36-27-15-7
6-6-14-25-29-39-37-43-55-47
38-65-60-66-69-80-81-65
(all information prior to week 40 with many thanks to Flying Padre Jr.)

ATYCLB is also close to overtaking that other U2 album on the charts: The Best Of 1980-1990. In its 104th week, the album drops four positions to #61. Whatever its performance, I'm always happy to see this album on the charts so long after it debuted. It's the icing on the cake. With the Christmas season coming into full swing I am positive about its performance the coming weeks.
The Best Of 1980-1990's (4th?) chart run is:
86-46-37-45-62-57-61

The #1 album in the Netherlands is Freak Of Nature by Anastacia. This makes her the only artist of 2001 to have two #1 albums in one year. In March her debut album Not That Kind went to #1 after 55 weeks. This occurance didn't happen in 2000, although it also happenend in 1999 (Andrea Bocelli) and 1998 & 1997 (Celine Dion).
It took some time to locate Britney's album as she drops to 32. I already hear that Status Quo song: Down down deeper down!
smile.gif
Contemporaries the Backstreet Boys also drop, although only one position to #21. As I said last week: The end of teen pop is nigh! Or so I hope...
Anastacia's single Paid My Dues rises one position to #7.

Anastacia is currently performing a lot better than U2. It hurts to say it, but Walk On drops a whopping one eight positions. Please, whisper it softly, eighteen...
frown.gif
The single is only in its fourth week, but it is already dropping faster than a Britney Spears song (oops,
eek.gif
did I really say that?!). Oh well, at least it made the top 10.
Here is the chart run of Walk On:
31-8-10-28

What's Going On? rises again for the first time in weeks. Even though it is only one position, it at least shows some life. Even though it will, unfortunately, not be a big hit it will at least raise some extra money for charity.
What's Going On?'s run on the charts is:
61-26-26-27-34-33

There is a new #1 single, L'Amour Toujours (translated as Love Today) by Gigi D'Agostino. I've never heard the song, so I can't comment on it. As D'Agostino is apparently a DJ I assume it is some trance stuff. Not my cup of X Tea C.
wink.gif

J-Lo stays again at #5, for the 3rd week in a row I think. Britney drops six positions to #30 and the BSB drop to #22.
Sometimes I think part of the Dutch population does have a good taste in music.
Gigi D'Agostino's album, also called L'Amour Toujours, is the highest new entry in the album charts at #46.

How does an album debut at #17 and already have a gold certification in its first week of release?I'm referring to America "Tribute for Heros". Which features U2's live performance of Walk On.
I think its great! Hey more money for victims! But I'm puzzled as to this certification with only 125,000 copies sold??

Yes U2 rises two spots in the U.S. charts. I would argue voxson about the decrease in sales. It may be true, but overall sales increased across the board again this week as Christmas draws closer. There were quite a few debuts in the top 60 and not a lot of big drops by anyone. So I would say U2 held steady if not went up in sales. Remember a gold background indicates the albums with the biggest sales increases that week, it doesn't mean that an album without a gold background decreased in sales, it just didn't increase very much if at all.

Stuck holds strong on the adult chart which is good, but to be expected as that is the slowest moving chart in the world!

It's a mystery what this next week will bring. U2 is on the cover of Spin which just hit the store shelves, but other than that they will be out of site for a few weeks now until grammy nominations.

MacFly2
Certifications are made by the number of copies shipped, so that is a perfectly reasonable number. You will find some really funny stuff when you look at certifications for albums by "hot" sellers like nsync, BSB, Garth Brooks, etc... that then don't sell so well. for example, the BSB were certified 8 million in the first month, but had only sold about 2 million. I think they have sold (to actual consumers) about 3 to 4 million now. That means there are boxes and boxes of "Black and Blue" in the backrooms of music stores everywhere.
smile.gif

On an earlier note. Here is the hitsdaily double chart. The numbers on the left are their position last week and then their position this week.

As you can see by the percentage sales up or down, that sales were up this week and that people that were at 0% change dropped on the chart 5-10 spots. People that stayed around the same position increased around 10% or so. This should remain fairly constant throughout the chart and it shows that U2 almost definitely had a sales increase.

Walk On (which was released a week later here than in most European countries) enters the German single chart at #54 this week. This is the lowest debut of the ATYCLB-singles. (BD hit #7, Stuck #40 and Elevation #31).

ATYCLB does not re-enter the charts and I don't think it will in the near future.
ATYCLB's run on Germany's album chart (x = out of Top 100):
1-1-3-4-11-17-21-20-21-22-
24-29-29-30-33-22-20-29-33-32-

x-x-x-47-34-31-39-46-44-49-

After some research I found out that U2 sold quite a bit more than 30,000 copies last week. Here is the link to a Yahoo page which states that Neil Diamond's greatest hits album (which entered the chart at #90, 14 places below ATYCLB) sold 30,000 copies: http://dailynews.yahoo.com/h/nm/20011213/en/music-sales_4.html

Unfortunately, I cannot find any numbers for records closer to the #76 position. Still, more than one year after its debut sales are still quite strong (especially for an album already that old). Remember, selling 20,000 copies per week for a whole year also equates platinum (1 million copies).

We can make a pretty good guess on this weeks sales. Since we know that the previous week was around 30,000 (#73 was reported as 31,000 & ATYCLB was at #78) and I believe that the gold background indicates significant rises (10% or more) which ATYCLB did not get. Knowing that this weeks #90 sold 30,000 would lead me to believe that ATYCLB at #76 sold roughly 32,000 copies and that is my final answer.

Does anyone know of anyway to get access to actual SoundScan data? I know for awhile this information was getting leaked to us and obviously news organizations get access and report some actual sales figures so why is it not fully published out to the top 1000 or so positions? I would certainly think that this type of information would attract interest to the music world. I'm not in marketing, and maybe for good reasons, but often the marketing, or lack thereof, of products & companies makes me scratch my head.

You have to subscribe to Soundscan to get the data. I don't know how much a subscription costs, but it being industry data I don't think it's affordable for a normal person. I also don't know the terms of Soundscan, but I think it may have a clause forbidding subscribers to publish the entire list.

I must respectfully disagree with your sales estimate. This gold background thing is what is throwing us off. We really have no idea the qualifications to receive it, so I must go with the hard numbers.

hits reports #50 at about 60,000 and yahoo reports #90 at 30,000. hits is usually a teenie bit high, so lets put #50 at 58,000.

Therefore we take the difference in sales (28,000) and divide that by the number of chart positions (40) and we get an average of 700 copies per position difference.

There are 14 positions between U2 and Niel Diamond at number 90. So we multiply 700 by 14 and we get 9,800. We add this to the 30,000 sold last week and we get 39,800.

This really does follow normal chart patterns. It is usually about 1,000 copies difference per position on the chart (not including the top ten or so)

And looking at the hits chart listed above, it is easy to see that U2 went up at least 25% probably a little more. Albums on the chart that increased around 25% stay at about the same chart position.
Albums that increase around 10% drop 5 to 10 spots and albums that don't increase or decrease in sales go down 10 or more.

womanfish,
I hope your numbers are right but it seemed almost impossible that an album increasing 25%+ would not get a gold background until I noticed that Hits Double Daily shows Now Vol. 7 increasing 25% with no Billboard gold background so it could be possible but most likely it is an overcalculation by Hits.

Assuming my number is low, and I think it may be seeing your calculations, lets assume that last week it was much closer to the #73 album (which was probably rounded to 31k in the press release) and say that ATYCLB was also at 31,000. Still assuming that the gold signifies 10%, which is a big assumption with nothing to back it up other than looking at the Hits increases other than Now Vol.7, lets say it just missed this designation which would put it at 34,000. This is my final last answer for now.
smile.gif

If I had more time I would go through previous weeks of Billboard charts to follow ATYCLB with the known Soundscan numbers to try to determine what a gold background really means.

yes it's all quite confusing, but this is what I think. Billboard states that "Entries with gold backgrounds and italicized numbers for current position are albums with the greatest sales gains this week."

Because of this I think that the determination for a gold background changes each week (ie. it's not a set number or percentage increase)
Because there was a big increase across the board this week because Christmas is looming near, there were tons of albums that increased a fairly high percentage. Maybe there's a limit on the gold backgrounds that they give. I don't know. What I do know is that U2 increased sales this week and from everything that I can see they are sitting around 39,000 or maybe higher. It just defys all my instincts and knowledge to think that an album that is 14 spots ahead of a 30,000 seller only sold 32 or even 34,000. It just doesn't seem to calculate.

So either there were enough large increases that U2's increase wasn't enough to get a background, or someone at Billboard made a mistake (I have seen it happen before). Although I think it may be the first reason.

So I stick with my calculation of 39,000.

Damn I wish there was some way to know for sure

I don't understand this:

Walk On debuted at No. 9 in Australia.

What's the deal with that? HMV (the largest music branch in Oz) charted it at No.1 where it stayed EVERYDAY of the week.
VERY weird, and a little disheartening, but at least it got into the top 10.
I'd say U2 could prob release 2 new singles. The next (should be WILD HONEY) should be released in 5 weeks to radio and 8 weeks to the public.....no later, no sooner.
KITE should be released soon after that.....depending on how well WILD HONEY does, but it won't matter much, they're such DIFFERENT songs, they wouldn't clash, much like MYSTERIOUS WAYS and ONE.
Anyway......knowing U2, you never know!
