I hate that US cities got most of the songs for them, like u2 wants to kiss thier asses:
Miami, New York, Cit of Blinding Lights, Angel of Harlem.

And when it comes to European cities, then the thema of the song is about drugs(of course with exceptions)

Youre assuming COBL is about New York? It could be interpreted as being about any large city. I think of it as being partly about the first time Bono set foot in London (with Ali) to promote the band, the lyrics make more sense that way in my opinion.

I agree.... COBL is about New York.

The line..... "I've seen you in the clothes you made"comes from the fashion line EDUN and we all know that was first promoted in New York ( Saks 5th Avenue. )

Also the line "They're advertising in the skies"...
refers to Times Square. ( which is also New York )

wow, so New York is the only city with advertising in the skies?

Ever been to Picadilly circus in London?

I think there are some overly narrow interpretations of U2 songs on this thread.

The song is not just about NY.....

This is words from Bono live on Top Of The Pops - 2004-10-16,

"This is, uh City of Blinding Lights
It's about coming to London and New York
When we were kids, and uh these great cities
And y'know not realizing how powerful
We were in our naivete
And how, you know, innocence is so much stronger
And what you pick up of the experience...."

The lyrics from Stay that mention places is,

Faraway, so close
Up with the static and the radio
With satellite television
You can go anywhere
Miami, New Orleans
London, Belfast and Berlin

What a great song eh!

Maybe in the future they will mention a place they are real fans of like Vancouver, Toronto, or Tokyo.

 ummm city of blinding lights came out before edun... i think you're stretching there.

bono has said a few times that the song is kinda a mesh between their first trip into london and new york, with the chorus set durring the post-9/11 MSG shows. he also said in the MTV Jammed special that the band refers to new york as "the city of blinding lights," which in all reality was probably bono just blowing smoke up the guy's ass and trying to promote the new album but eh... whatever.

on a side note, i played the song on my iPod while walking up towards times square the other night... twas a goosebump enducing moment

side note... the hands that built america is also set in new york city

Yes, but, for some reason I can't see the advertising there being anything as huge as what they have going on in NY. :der:

That's true !!! "City Of Blinding Lights" was out before the Edun fashion line started.....
But the concept of Edun's clothes and "fair trade" issues were
"in-the-making " years before "City Of Blinding Lights" was even written.. or heard of.. as a song.......
The song was released... before the clothing line was......
that's what it "boils down" to....

Unforgettable Fire has this weird Japan feeling going on in it to me at least.

That's an "under-statement" indeed......
Unforgettable Fire has nothing at all to do with Japan....

The Unforgettable Fire LP was written because of the exhibition U2 saw at the Chicago Peace Museum.... (while touring America during the "War" era). The exhibit was a collection of paintings
and drawings... by the survivors... of the bombings in Nogasoki
and Hirosheema. The Peace Museum also had a collection of work dedicated to Martin Luther King Jr. It was with these images
in mind..... that U2 went home to Dublin to make their next record
(The Unforgettable Fire)

Listen, maybe Bono said thet COBL is about NY and London, but still after the 9-11 i think that he got the inspiration in the Big Apple.

It's no secret that a conscience can sometimes be a pest,
It's no secret that Hungary's capital is actually Budapest :D

It's no secret that this cow isn't an ordinary cow,
It's no secret that this cow comes from Moscow.

:lmao: U2 need to do a medley of old songs with the lyrics changed as an Eastern European Tribute Medley!

Hello, hello
I'm at a place called Mexico

You say, you want
A highway with noone on it,
Kopenhagen just to look upon it.

Lookin' for to save my, save my soul,
Lookin' for that street in Paris, that I haven't seen before :D

How 'bout Reykjavik, try rhyming that!?!
