Locust is a cool song. I just got my signed copies of ULTC yesterday -- the ones MWP was supposed to package and mail out himself (gotta make the man work! ). I got a little note from MWP too.

Oh! and Marty has a Myspace page, complete with blog. It's here:
http://profile.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=user.viewprofile&friendID=70894428

Kind of fun to read so far. Almost all what he's listening to and musical recomendations. I wonder if he'll rant too?

have heard 2 tracks so far on local station 3d (it has entered there top 20 this week) i thought one song was boring:ohmy: actually thought it was a church wannabe band until i listened closer and knew it could only be killbee...the other song was brilliant maainly because it sounded quite like and you r bird can sing from the beatles revolver album....ssorry this is rushed must go byeeeee

Ack! You didn't say "Let's go for a walk, Doris" did you?

If that makes no sense read this. :D

I laughed my ass off. :)

For the many fans of this thread...ok, for blueeyedgirl and reptile, I found this 2004 interview with Steve (and Tim a little bit in the background). It's a bit different as he tells a bit about how the songs (specifically Reversal in this case) were developed for Forget Yourself. During the interview snippets of bass, guitars, drums and other percussion, and vocals are played seperately. Kinda cool.

For this link you must scroll about 2/3's of the way down the page.

:)True just at 2.40 in the morning I don't usually think that logically:D

Well, you certainly can read this thread. There is loads of info here, although some may be a bit on the trivia side (still it's fun).

However, if you want brief, but fairly unbiased reviews of their albums I find All Music Guide to be fairly good. Click here for main albums You might also want to check out the reviews of the compilations (you will see the tab for them when you go to the main albums page). I don't agree with all their reviews, but they aren't bad overall.

The band and each member now have Myspace sites, so you can hear a few songs there. Of course the Church site is pushing their two newest albums, so you won't get their more well known work. Here are some links:

The Church

Steve Kilbey (I have the painting used as his avatar. :) It's titled Self Portrait -- Absinthe)

Marty Willson-Piper

As for albums I would recommend -- Starfish is always good. It has their most popular song "Under The Milky Way" which I still love, and is generally reasonably available. One of the best ofs can be good also -- there is a US release called Under The Milky Way: The Best of The Church and an Aussie released titled Best of The Church (real imaginative, eh? ). Either one is ok, but both miss the past decade.

Anyway that should give you enough to get started. :)

Danke schon Indra*bows*....the music stores round here are pretty good, will give a quick look around tomorrow...I may start with the Starfish album...i prefer beginning with albums rather than a compilation.

I agree with you on compilations generally. I've been a Church fan for 18 years and I only have a couple of compilations of their (neither of the best ofs :shifty: ). I think you get a better feel for a band by listening to one or more of their albums in full.

Heyday is also a very cool album, and I do really like their newest release Uninvited, Like The Clouds. I think any of them could work well for a newbie. :)

I'll be interested to know what you think of them (even if you hate 'em :) ).

Just curious Indra, did you write the wikipedia article on The Church? Definitely one of the longest band write ups I have seen on that site.

Nope, I am[/i[ really good at blathering on (and on and on  ) about the band, but it wasn't me.

It is a long, involved write up, isn't it?

It was written by two German Church fans for the German Wikipedia site and then these same two fans translated what they wrote into English. It was proofread by a couple of native English speakers, so most of the awkwardness a translation has was eliminated.

Not really a question about The Church, but I heard "Under The Milky Way" on the radio a few weeks ago and thought of you indra.

:)

A few years ago a couple of us were chatting online with SK and another fan mentioned he'd heard UTMW on the radio that day or a couple of days before. SK typed in "another 2 cents in olde sks bank account." Made me laugh. And now whenever someone tells me they heard a Church song on the radio, I think "aha! another cent or two in olde SK's bank account!" Always makes me smile. :)

Well...Europe is getting a few shows, so if anyone in these areas wants to check these guys out, they are an excellent live band. I think the show in Budapest is a freebie too. A small group of fans worked really hard to make the Budapest show happen. One was scheduled for the 2004 tour but fell through. Really nice to see it working out this time :)

There could be more dates -- they seem to be making it up as they go. Typical of The Church. :)

Yes, a very happy belated, Mart. Maybe we shall meet again one day. 6 shows in 12 days back in LA in 1984 was just too long ago. And extra special thanks to my pal indra for setting me back on the path! There is life after U2.

And for anyone in or near London tomorrow -- well today in London -- who's interested in checking them out live, they are playing at The Borderline.

They are doing two separate shows, with ticket holders for both shows being allowed back in the venue for a post gig party. And it's relatively cheap. So go. :)

Last night, our good old Aussie all night video show had a Go Betweens special, showing lots of the old clips, God what a lot of gems :( Then they showed 2 Jack Frost songs: Every Hour God Sends and Thought That I Was Over You. Man I hadn't seen 'Every Hour' for years (nice baseball caps:wink: ) and I'd never seen "Thought". It just made me

I've never seen Every Hour God Sends :( and have only seen Thought I Was Over You since Grant's death. I was amazed at how much fun they seemed to be having in the "Thought" video. Steve even smiled! But, yeah. Now seeing them, listening to the albums, thinking of all the "what ifs" (SK and GW had recently made up after a falling out several years ago, so a third Jack Frost album was a possibility -- it hurts so much just thinking about that. I really love the Jack Frost albums), is very very sad.

A couple JF songs are on SK's MySpace page now. And during the European Church shows they played "Providence" as a tribute to Grant. I wonder if they will do that here too.

Speaking of the US tour -- more dates are being announced all the time -- it's pretty extensive for them. Right now it's looking as if I should be able to catch at least four or five shows. And depending on their scheduling and if I can get someone to take care of my responsibilities, I may be able to hit as many as 10 shows. They would be soooo sick of seeing me. :)

Still waiting for confirmation of the Indra's Living Room gig though. I've even promised them munchies from the vegan bakery down the street. :D

I just nipped this list off the official site. Still a few more dates to confirm, but this is what is out there now. There is a nice little open space between Ferndale, MI and Cleveland, OH where they could easily do a few private gigs at the Indra's Living Room venue.... :D And they could be great money makers too. I'd make people buy a couple of art prints for the cheap seats (the kitchen), and if they wanted better spots (actually in the living room) they would have to buy or commission original paintings (the more expensive the painting, the better the spot of course  ). I tell you, they should let me run their tour. :D

I'd love to do everything from Myrtle Beach to Chicago (and there should be a few more dates in that span too), but I'm not sure I can get someone to take care of my critters and aunt for me past the Sellarsville date. :( Guess I'm gonna have to do some finagling. :)

And here's a clip of Steve, Marty and Tim in a promo for Musicfest in Sydney (June 21 & 24). click here

I couldn't help but laugh at Tim's comment: "people forget all they have to do to become a musician is simply play it or sing it and then you're qualified."

Obviously, the man has never heard me. :|

And if he's lucky, he never will....

Hey Everyone

It's pretty funny that my first post on this forum is concerning that other incredibly amazing band that is the Church  !!!

I was really amazed to find this thread .. I actually attempted to start reading every page last night ... but there's sooo many, it almost gave me a headache (but in a good way  )

Indra, your knowledge is very impressive :) Puts me to shame, haha! I was also wondering where you found that gorgeous photo of Marty .. is that one of yours?? Are you catching any of the US dates??? I'm pretty jealous at the moment!

I'm so addicted to SKs blog spot at the moment .. not only is he genius, but makes me laugh out loud very often :) But, I am much more of a MWP girl myself :)

Anyway, keep up the good work, spreading the word :)

Welcome!

May I congratulate you on your excellent taste?!

Ooooh! Hi TranceEnding! (great user name by the way ) I'm so excited to find another Churchie. :) I'm pretty sure I'm Interference's resident Church freak.

I'm kind of obviously a SK fan, but blueeyedgirl is a another MWP fan. And I must admit MWP is one truly gorgeous guy. :)

You read the blogge too? I also love that thing! I never thought he would keep it up this long when he started, but I am so happy he has. And it's just gotten better and better. I must admit I quite like the rants. And oh yeah, sometimes I laugh very very hard. Of course sometimes his blog entries make me cry too. Far too many of the sad ones lately. He's really, really open in it, and sometimes I can't help think, "Steve, are you sure you want to let it all hang out?" But he wants to tell his story his way, and he is doing that. It certainly is compelling reading.

I can't help but think a few members here think of this as "That Church thread from Hell" as it's gone on soooo long and just keeps coming back. But I am nothing if not persistent. I started it when I was frustrated by yet another delay in the release of ULTC. And now they are getting ready to tour here! :D I know what you mean about feeling jealous about the shows...since the FY tour in 2004 I have been sooo jealous of all the shows in Australia. Not only Church shows, but also MWP and SK solo shows. And there were also SK poetry readings there! I'm such a sucker for SK's voice!

The photo of Marty (the one on this page, right? It was taken at the Yallah Roadhouse on the EMD tour this past Nov. and Dec.) is on the official band site click here but you need to sign up for the mailing list to get into the area where the photo is. Once you sign up, click on the Eclectica section (it's at the top of the page), login , and then go to the Image Gallery. These are photos by various fans and such. There are some fun ones. ...and then there are ones like this:

STEVIE~1.jpg

It looks as if he's playing in his pyjamas!
