sleep in our clothes and wait for winter to leave"

Great tune.

yeah the lyrics are good times, but i really appreciate the way he sings the song.

it's malaise at its finest.

... i think.

there's probably a better way to describe it.

Nonono.

I think it's just had a longer time to win people over emotionally.

Boxer is a finer album, yes.

I've noticed that everyone I know who was a National fan(atic) before Boxer was somewhat disappointed with it and prefer Alligator. (JiB, 3 real life friends I have, me)

Maybe if I hadn't been a fan before hand and wasn't expecting them to progress and not step backwards into pre-Sad Songs era writing, I would have liked it more as well. I still think it's a great album and it will end up on my year end list, but Alligators eat Boxers.

QFT.

Alligator has much more range than Boxer.

Plus, it has fucking "All The Wine," "Abel," and "Mr. November."

That's pretty unfuckwithable, fo reelz.

I didn't like Alligator that much the first time I heard it. I actually don't think I really liked it until about the 4th listen. But then it was like discovering something really neat and going with it.

My feeling is that it's that way for a lot of people - they were surprised in the long term by how good Alligator was and expected brilliance from the new album. Maybe because I was conditioned to giving myself some time, I didn't feel any kind of disappointment from Boxer.

Good lord.

There was a time when Ward was the best QB in NYC, despite just playing with the Knicks at the time.

And, yes, the National's singer puts a lot of.....angst?.....into his delivery.

Fuck. So many albums so little time....I've almost got a reasonable Top 15 that can be sent in but there's stuff like Sunset Rubdown/HEALTH that I know are contenders.....top ten is pretty set in stone at least, more just that there's about six of the 140ish (!) that I've heard this year that I've yet to add to my master list.

And to continue with The National discussion, loved me Alligator and loved their live show - one of the best I've ever been to, transcendent to the max. New album sounded like a bunch of middling lounge tunes. Previous release had a nice range between unbridled, shameless rockers ("Mr. October") and eccentric crooning ("Secret Meeting")....

Hard to compare, for me, when the band is so new and I've now given each album 3 listens each.....but, I'll take The Boxer over Alligator any day. I like both, but The Boxer is better. To me.

a. Keep getting your submissions in to me. There have only been about six so far and we need a lot more to get good numbers. My email addy and the details is in this thread a few pages back. Remember, the deadline is the 28th.

b. Can we just have a thread for the National already?

You realize they have 4 albums, right? Not exactly new, unless you're meaning new to you.
