My trip to Memphis (plus cheesy U2 moments)

I just got back from a trip to Memphis...I went over fall break and it was my first time there. To sum up the 4 days there...lots of Elvis, lots of beer, and lots of barbecue. And of course all that equals lots of fun!!

The most memorable part of the trip was the visit to Sun. There is just so much history in that building--it was incredible! When I walked into the studio itself (and I know this is kinda lame) I got a little choked up. Gotta love big music nerds.

While in the studio we listened to tracks that were recorded there (duh) by Elvis, Jerry Lee Lewis, Roy Orbison, and Johnny Cash. The last track played was When Love Comes to Town. Before playing the music, our tour guide told us to feel free to dance, sing or whatever while the music was playing...but no one really did anything, just listened to the music (I was too in awe of everything to do much for the most part). But as U2 and B.B. were playing, I got this huge adrenaline rush...I jumped in front of my friend Robin, used my camera as a microphone, and just belted out "But I did what I did before love came to town!" Needless to say, everyone went nuts. It was hyterical.

Later that night while drinking beer and listening to live blues on the famous Beale St., I ran into a guy who looked just like the Edge (and ladies, he was damn sexy!). He was even wearing a little black hat! I bumped into him again at the Gibson Guitar lounge where we were seeing this guy Monte Montgomery. Turns out the Edge was his drummer. I saw him when I came in and told him that U2 were my favorite band and that he looked just like Edge! He said he loved U2, and he kissed me and I got some photos. Fun stuff.

After Sun, Graceland was a bit of a letdown, but still, it was interesting. Sorry this is so long...anyway, more fun stuff happened but I'll spare you from the details.

Sounds like a kick ass trip, Lemon Sis!!!

I wish I had been there since I didn't make Beale or Sun the last time I was there.

Post pics when you get them!!!!

That's pretty wicked. Sun studio sounds like it would be incredible.

Hey ~LadyLemon~ sounds like an awesome time! Did you know Bruce Springsteen climbed over those walls of Graceland once to see if Elvis was home?! we are all fans!

I couldn't help but post this after reading about Sun Studios (so cool to visit that, btw!)

I know what you mean LadyLemon. Glad you had fun. There are lots of U2-ey moments when in Memphis.

I went there last January and had to make sure that my friend took me Sun Studios. Hehe, when I walked inside, I was trying to imagine U2 recording "Angel Of Harlem". The tour guide said that those were the very drums that Larry used. I don't know how true. And he mentioned there was one obsessed Elvis fan who even licked one of the microphones in there (as EP actually used it before). Geez, I wouldn't lick the mic even if Bono used it.

Did you check out the U2 display in the gift shop? I wanted to smash the glass and steal Larry's drumsticks! Oh, and I had my pic taken beside the sign outside with the names of all the singers/bands that have recorded at Sun.

Did you go to the Civil Rights Museum/Lorraine Motel (can't remember the exact name) where MLK was shot? The RnR museum isn't all that good. The Gibson guitar shop was better. I even saw a cutey who was strumming one of the guitars.

Graceland wasn't that great, but pretty much interesting and I was amazed at all the gold records that Elvis got. Not to mention the Harleys and automobiles.

Okay, that was a mouthful. I'll shut up now.

Haha...I got my picture taken with the mic...my friend Sarah pretended to lick it in her pic, but didn't actually do it.

Yep, I got my picture taken in front of the U2 display, and we all got a nice group shot outside of the original doors, under the neon lights.

I was pissed about not getting to the Civil Rights museum and also not seeing the Rock and Soul. Didn't get to the Gibson guitar shop, but I did see a show in the Gibson lounge. Very nice place!

it's not worth it. i live about half an hour away from the downtown area, and i've been to the museum once. that's enough for me, it's kinda lame.

when i first moved here, i slid down the same hill that edge did. but i think it's now an apartment complex.

Cool. Now I don't feel as bad for missing it! However, I did get to sit on the bank of the Mississippi and eat fried chicken and banana pudding. Didn't slide down it though. It was in the area where Jeff Buckley drowned...so that was kind of depressing.

Oh, that's so true. The museum is small and there's...nothing. I feel sorry for the old guy who mans it. The guitar shop was better.

Is this the one under the bridge that was featured in the film "The Client"? Aside from R&H, that is.

We also drove to Tunica, Mississippi 'cause my friend wanted to play at the casino.
