Transformers Movie

Flop or hit?

I admit, I'm excited to see this movie. I grew up on those toys and I wonder if it will be any good.

I'm dead serious when I say how good the animated movie was - at least to a kid that grew up playing with the toys. To an 8 year old - Unicron was scary enough, but then having Prime die...heros aren't supposed to die and his death scene was gut wrenching. Stupid Hot Rod!!!

I think it'll make a lot of money, at least 150 mil, maybe 200.

The only thing that kills me about this movie is that it's directed by Michael Bay, the master of oversaturated, stylized, blue/yellow action messes.

The fact that Steven Spielberg is involved really interests me, he usually produces very good material. Plus, Shia Labeouf (sp?) is a capable actor to carry this movie, I really think he can do it.

Oh, and Hugo Weaving is Megatron. That's fucking badass.

It will look good and make a mint, but I'm betting the story line runs about as deep the drop of coke I just spilled on my desk.

How deep could the story possibly be to begin with? Giant alien robots come to earth from outer space to beat the shit out of each other. That's about it.

...and I'm all in.

I think I may have been too old to get the whole Transformers thing when they came out ... plus, I was a little girl, not a little boy.

So. It's about ... things that ... turn into other things?

Um. Sounds like a killer plot!

In all seriousness, though, I confess to being a bit baffled about why this movie is so anticipated. Or why it's being made.

Is it like a Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles kind of thing? Was Transformers a comic book or something before they were toys? Or is it just a movie based on toys?

The concept of toys that turn into other toys is fascinating to little kids, little boys in particular. And while that concept may not be so fascinating anymore those little kids are grown up, it still holds a huge nostalgia factor. I suspect that a large percentage of the people that go to the Transformers movie will be going in an attempt to relive their childhood.

But they really were cool toys. A truck that turned in a walking fighting machine.....a gun that turned into a robot.....etc.

I confess to even loving the line of transformers that McDonalds put in their happy meals when I was a kid....french fries/cheeseburgers/big macs/a soda cup/a mcnuggets box/a mcpancakes box/an ice cream cone, that all turned into different sorts of dinosaurs....badass.

:nerd:

I buy that very logical explanation. Thank you, namkcuR.

But by the same token, I don't know that I'd be up for seeing a live-action movie about Barbies.

- Michael Bay directing
- Tyrese acting
- Even Stevens the main character
- Optimus Prime with flame body-paint

*facepalm* I'll pass

I don't know. I think that could have the potential to be a tremendous porno flick.

:reject:

The reason I want to see it is because it's a huge-budget movie about giant robots destroying shit. Pure entertainment. I couldn't think up a better blockbuster concept. Just mindless action with huge budgets. THATS what summer movies are about. That and comedies. I've seen Knocked Up, now it's time to see Transformers.

Plus, Starscream is friggen awwweeeessssooooooommmmmeeeeeee!!!!lolololololwwwowoooooooooooottt.

Yeah, but all the women would just topple over face first, since no human could have those exact Barbie proportions. And plus, I don't think it would work well as porn - Ken has no genitalia!

:lmao: I saw that one
I saw that the day it came out in June 1986 with my older brother, after seeing an ad the night before and begging him to take me. I was 6 years old. It was rated PG 13 in the US, but General in Canada.

It'll probably just be an action movie with little dramatic realism, and that's kinda sad because wouldn't it be cool to actually sympathize with the characters? To do that, they have to get away from the Decepticons being evil, and that's something they won't do.

I was really hoping Frank Welker (the original Megatron) would reprise the role. I used to make my throat sore impersonating him as a kid.

Did Frank Welker voice every cartoon character ever?

Well, he and Casey Kasum. Now, on with the countdown...

Basically it's the same phenomenon as Ninja Turtles only much bigger because it has impacted male kids of that age group like no other carton has. It was all due to the 1984-1987 cartoon that got kids interested in the characters. Go Bots had the same premise but it wasn't nearly as successful. Toy company Hasbro was on a killer rolling streak, inventing and promoting GI Joe and My Little Pony the same way as Transformers. I think they shared some of the same writers, too.

It makes no rational sense. If one rewatches Transformers as a cartoon, it's embarrassing, but occasionally funny:
Check out this clip collection of humorous scenes from Transformers. I was way too young to understand all the references to drunkenness and mental illness. Some aren't really funny at all, but others are kinda neat.

I'm embarrased to have found early episodes (which were the best ones based on my rewatching things at age 13) so we can all rewatch them in geeky nostalgia, even though they're pretty bad:

Actually it's Casey Kasem; he's of Iranian decent.
I heard Scatman Crothers (Jazz) death reported in the news, so he must have been a big deal.
Hot Rod was voiced by Brat Packer Judd Nelson;

Unicron was probably Orson Welles' last jobs before he died.

By the way, I don't obsess over this stuff anymore; I just memorized all the names when I was 10 and got the movie on video. :)

Was that the guy from The Breakfast Club? I only remember the guy's name becuase of the Transformers; he was also in a 1989 NBC TV movie called The Billionaires Boys' Club, in which they kidnap some stereotypical Arab guy and seal him in a box.

I've only watched a few minutes and already I'm extremely embarrassed. The dialogue is even worse than I remember, which is understandable, but I actually used to engage in play fighting based on the drama from these scenes because I thought they were so cool and dramatic!

I'm glad you're enjoying them, uberbeaver. I don't know how that person managed to put up clips that size; I heard they don't post anything over 10 minutes on youtube.com.
