the Euro 2004 thread

I find all the media coverage of this tournament here a bit extreme considering we aren't even in Europe! I have to return to school next week but I'll try to follow the tournament anyway. My predictions:

Germany to get knocked out in the group stages
Holland to lose on penalties at some stage
Latvia not to progress
Sweden to the semi-finals
Czech Republic or Italy to win.

Next week Euro 2004 starts for us Dutchies with the match against Germany. Both the Netherlands as Germany had a disastrous build-up (with the Netherlands losing to Ireland with 0-1 in their last match and Germany with 0-2 against a B-team of Hungary). So in a way, it'll be the blind playing the crippled. It should be interesting... (cannot predict the result though)

BTW, the Netherlands losing on penalties is a no-brainer. Penalties should be abolished!

C ya!

Marty

it could be an interesting championship

hard to predict anything really

I could name 8 teams who should be able to make it through to the semi finals

there is no coverage about the Euro 2004 here.

I am hoping to catch a few matches though at some of the pubs around here.

germany vs holland is the big game i reckon....

heres my predicitions

GROUP A

1. portugal
2. greece (surprise package)
3.spain
4. russia

GROUPB

1.france
2. england (just)
3. swiss
4. croatia

GROUPC

1. italy
2. denmark
3. bulgaria
4. sweden

GROUP D

1. czech
2. germany
3. holland
4 lil latvia

france will take the whole thing out, greece will surprise everyone, england will be mediocre, and portugal will be unlucky to not win in some way

ok, we gonna win the cup (italy, of course  ) against france (damn, i hope it so much!!!) portugal and germany will be eliminated after the first leg, russia will be the surprise, vieri the top scorer, totti the best assist man.....

I can't wait to see some games here. If we're lucky
Not sure exactly where you are, but there are definitely some pubs in the DC area showing the matches...I'll certainly be going to a couple!

Well, being English, i can't bloody wait. Sunday's game will be immense. I have my St. Georges Cross in my window already.

COME ON ENGLAND!

^and thanks to you, I now know which English songs to sing.

haha! well some maybe a bit....below the belt...shall we say!

hehe but listen out for 'Rule Britannia' and 'It's Coming Home (Three Lions)' as well as the Great Escape tune :D

ok, so here are the lyrics. now i have to hear it!

[q]
Three Lions

i think it's bad news for the English game)
(we're not creative enough)
(we're not positive enough)
It's coming home, it's coming home, it's coming,
footballs coming home (we'll go on getting bad)
It's coming home, it's coming home, it's coming,
footballs coming home
It's coming home, it's coming home, it's coming,
footballs coming home
It's coming home, it's coming home, it's coming,
footballs coming home
Everyone seems to know the score, they've seen it all before
they just know, they're so sure
that England's gonna, throw it away, gonna blow it away
but i know they can play,
'cus i remember

three lions on a shirt
Jules Remet still gleaming
thirty years of hurt
never stopped me dreaming

so many jokes, so many snears
but all those 'oh so near's
when your down, through the years
but i still see that tackle by Moore
and when Linaker scored, Bobby belting the ball
and nobby dancing

three lions on a shirt
Jules Remet still gleaming
thirty years of hurt
never stopped me dreaming

(England have done it, in the last minute of extra time)
(what a save, what now)
(good old England, England that couldn't play football)
(England have got it in the bag)

i know that was then, but it could be again
It's coming home, it's coming home, it's coming,
footballs coming home
It's coming home, it's coming home, it's coming,
footballs coming home
(England have done it)
It's coming home, it's coming home, it's coming,
footballs coming home
It's coming home, it's coming home, it's coming,
footballs coming home *REPEATED IN BACKGROUND*

three lions on a shirt
Jules Remet still gleaming
thirty years of hurt
never stopped me dreaming

three lions on a shirt
Jules Remet still gleaming
thirty years of hurt
never stopped me dreaming

three lions on a shirt
Jules Remet still gleaming
thirty years of hurt
never stopped me dreaming [/q]

Yeah probably Fado! I've seen a few UK matches there so i'd imagine that they'd show EURO 2004. :)

Hope Italy, for obvious reason!!!

Anyway, it's a pity Ireland isn't there!
I love so much watching the players before the game -- they use to stay in the centre of the field and sing "with or without you".

I saw it just once and it was GREAT!!!!

COME ON ENGLAND!

what's important is that you'll beat france......so you can lose against italy in the final! ;) england got a very good team this year and eriksson is making a good job, lets see what owen will do.....hope you wont miss shearer! :)

seems both England and France have some kind of hang-ups over the defence. it's going to be a real cracker between two teams of international megastars who promise to serve up a feast of brilliant football.

so yeah, i'm predicting a 0-0.

oh 0-0?in fact it may be that they'll be happy with a draw being sure to beat croatia and switzerland....but in football you never know, zidane said that they gonna win 1-0...

I'm getting so nervous!
I would post a prediction, but i've been a fan long enough to get hopes up high - i will just take each day as it comes. My teams defender Ledley King looks like he will start - which is great, but will make me even more nervous as he plays for my team!

For a long time now I've felt one of England or France may not make it out of the first round. We'll see what happens, though.

The only team whose style I truly detest is Italy. Score 1 goal and then all 10 men back. How utterly unimaginative.

My predictions:

GROUP A
June 12:
Portugal 2 - Greece 0
Spain 1 - Russia 1

June 16:
Greece 1 - Spain 2
Russia 0 - Portugal 1

June 20:

Russia 1 - Greece 2

GROUP B

France 3 - England 2

June 17:
England 3 - Switzerland 0
Croatia 1 - France 3

June 21:
Croatia 0 - England 1
Switzerland 1 - France 2

GROUP C
June 14:
Denmark 1 - Italy 1
Sweden 2 - Bulgaria 0

June 18:
Bulgaria 1 - Denmark 2
Italy 2 - Sweden 0

June 22:
Italy 3 - Bulgaria 1
Denmark 1 - Sweden 2

GROUP D
June 15:
Germany 2 - Netherlands 3
Czech Republic 1 - Latvia 0

after 2002 italy isn't playing anymore in this way, they play very offensive, with del piero, totti, vieri, camoranesi.... and in the last 2 years italy lost just 2 times against wales and poland, the rest are victories, you'll be surprised about italy

what??? italy to lose against germany? naaaah! i think the final will be italy against france or spain.....and we'll win of course..  ..... by the way, davec, there isn't the golden goal anymore, now they play with the silver goal, it means when you score a goal the match goes on until the end of the extratime , for example: you score a goal in 8th min of the extratime, the game goes on until the 15th min, if you hold the advantage the game's over and you win after the first extratime. if a team reaches a draw, or no one makes a goal, you play the 2nd extratime.....there's no sudden death anymore, golden goal was the stupidest rule ever made in soccer

just an excuse to post him  :sexywink:
