I just finally watched "FF7: Advent Children." Now apparently, FF13 is supposed to be inspired by the design and pace of the battles in this film, and if that's the case, we're certainly in for one wild ride this console generation.

I think the director for FF13 is already on record saying that it will look better than Advent Children.

I just spent the last week playing all the way through Final Fantasy II on the SNES - via emulation - again.

It's truly one of the greatest games ever.

For people waiting on the new Zelda or those who enjoy action-adventure games I highly recommend Shadow of the Colossus.

The premise is rather simple, a young man named Wander is on his horse Agro carrying the body of a dead girl named Mono, to a temple where he hopes she can be resurrected. We do not know their past other than the girl was sacrificed because of her 'cursed fate', we do not even know what Wander's and Mono's connection is, other than he obviously cares for her.

Arriving at the temple a disembodied voice known as Dormin speaks to him, telling him in order for the girl to be revived Wander would have to kill 16 'colossi'...even after doing so it may not work and he would have to pay a great cost.

That is it basically for the story, you then set out through a desolate but hauntingly beautiful land tracking down these colossi with your trusty steed.

The art direction for this game is just amazing, the land itself is just so beautiful from open plains to mountains and ruins, everywhere you look there is wonderful eye candy. You can lose yourself just looking at the scenery at times, the gorges are awe inspiring. The land is empty though, there are no people other than yourself, there are no animals other than small lizards and birds, in fact there is little vegetation at all, other than some stubborn trees and alcoves of forest....it is all intentional though, it gives the sense that this place used to be full of life and inhabited but that something really awful happened there. It really gives off an eerie atmosphere and a startling sense of aloneness. The animation of colossi, your horse and character are all excellent as well, Agro's movement is very natural and horse like. My only complaint is that the camera can be a bit troublesome in that it can be fiddly to use especially while riding.

Unlike other adventure games there are no regular enemies that patrol the land, just 16 massive colossi. You track them down using your magic sword which emits a light directing you towards your target. It can be a challenge even to get to the colossi, climbing mountains, jumping off bridges, swimming lakes etc You soon learn to grasp the momentous size of your task.

It should be noted that Wander is no Link or superhero, he has a magic sword, his bow and arrows and Agro his horse, he jumps about as well as we would, he runs as about as fast as we would, in fact he ain't that great a swordsman either, he just has a very good grip and a lot of determination. His sword and bow are his only weapons, tactics, your wit and the environment are what will get you through the game.

The colossi themselves are magnificent to behold, the biggest creatures i've ever seen in a game, they are epic and the music rises to such epic occassions (the music is pretty excellent overall). The colossi all require you to hit their 'vitals' marked by a glowing blue tattoo when you shine your sword towards them, it is then your task to get up on the colossi and climb them to reach the vitals...the colossi themselves come in all sorts of shapes and sizes, they all look a mixture between man-made creations and organic beasts, and each needs their own strategy to defeat them, and the environment plays a major part in this at times as well. It truly is a battle between David and Goliath.

Defeating a colossus gives you a real sense of accomplishment as well and the desperation you feel when clinging to the neck of one of them thrashing about 150ft up in the air, hanging on for dear life gives a real rush, I was cursing quite frequently at the screen

The story begins to be revealed after the 8th colossus is defeated but the game manages to maintain a sense of urgency til then as well as your interest. That said the story is a very ambiguous affair leaving much of it up to your own interpretation, even after the lengthy cutscenes after you have defeated the 16th. The minimalist nature of the story works for the game though, it is enough to entice you into creating your own back story or idea of what had happened to the girl, the revelations at the end are very intriguing though.

The director Fumito Ueda (man behind Ico) has stated that Shadow of the Colossus is a prequel of sorts to Ico, which may help people understand the ending of the game. Apparently the same team is working on a new game, no word yet whether it will once again be related to the SotC and Ico world, but I am hoping for a game based around Wander's and Mono's backstory as there is so much that needs to be filled in, the game leaves you with an urge to try and find out everything you can about the characters and story.

Much longer than I had planned but I would say it is a 9 out of 10 game, the dodgy camera lets it down a bit but overall it is a wonderful experience.

It's that time of week again gaming pals. Some more sales numbers coming in to report. Now you can see what's HOT and what's NOT

Media Create hardware sales for this latest week of June
1.) Nintendo DS Lite - 157,022
2.) PS2 - 25,467
3.) PSP - 24,737
4.) Nintendo DS 10,132
5.) GBA SP - 3,784
6.) Gameboy Micro - 1,502
7.) Gamecube - 1,197
8.) Xbox 360 - 1,169
9.) Gameboy Advance - 25
10.) Xbox - 10

Great numbers again for the DS Lite. The lead over the PSP just gets bigger as the weeks roll on. Good sign for the Wii? Only time will tell. Also amazing to see the PS2 still garnering incredible sales so late in it's lifetime.

Media Create software sales for this latest week of June
1.) Valkyrie Profile 2: Silmeria (PS2) - 281,510
2.) New Super Mario Bros. (NDS) - 170,168 (1,848,813)
3.) Brain Age 2 (NDS) - 57,752 (2,594,989)
4.) Winning Eleven 10 (PS2) - 49,926 (863,457)
5.) Brain Age (NDS) - 38,766 (2,437,374)
6.) King of Fighters XI (PS2) - 28,015
7.) Animal Crossing WW (NDS) - 27,780 (2,857,990)
8.) English Training (NDS) - 24,978 (1,193,324)
9.) Sony Computer Science Kenkyuusho Kenmogi Kenichirou Hakase Kanshuu - Nou ni Kaikan: Aha Taiken (PSP) - 23,548
10.) Digimon Story - 21,520 (62,655)

Once again DS is dominating the charts, with half of the entire top 10 in its clutches. Great debut for VP2, if it has legs I'm sure it will be a mil seller in a very short time. Also look out for New Super Mario Bros. reaching the 2mil mark possibly by next week. That's it for now, I'll post when I see more US numbers and various results from other countries like the UK & France.

Here are the Media Create software sales for the most recent week of June/July

1.) New Super Mario Bros. (NDS) 154299 (2,003,112)
2.) Dragon Ball Z (PS2) 95082 (95,082)
3.) Brain Age 2 (NDS) 54564 (2,649,553)
4.) Valkyrie Profile 2: Silmeria (PS2) 37466 (318,976)
5.) Winning Eleven 10 (PS2) 10 37342 (900,799)
6.) Brain Age (NDS) 37228 (2,474,602)
7.) Animal Crossing WW (NDS) 27070 (2,885,061)
8.) Summer Holidays 20th Century (PSP) 26314 (26,314)
9.) English Training (NDS) 23883 (1,217,208)
10.) Atelier Iris Grand Fantasm (PS2) 23760 (23,760)

Well I guess maybe I'll retract my VP2 million dollar mark statement as it makes a pretty sharp drop. But as expected, NSMB continues its destruction of Japan as it eclipses the 2,000,000 units mark. Perhaps a sign of what is to come with Super Mario Galaxy? Who knows. More sales numbers coming soon...
