Little hand says it's time to rock and roll.
So, a hero of mine died suddenly last week. This song was played at his funeral and has been stuck in me the last few days. It haunts me and makes me feel hopeful...

Has anyone ever seen or heard anything about why Sufjan wrote it? What it means?

I've looked but can't find anything.

I have called you children, I have called you son.
What is there to answer if I'm the only one?
Morning comes in Paradise, morning comes in light.
Still I must obey, still I must invite.
If there's anything to say, if there's anything to do,
If there's any other way, I'll do anything for you.

I was dressed embarrassment.
I was dressed in wine.
If you had a part of me, will you take you're time?
Even if I come back, even if I die
Is there some idea to replace my life?
Like a father to impress;
Like a mother's mourning dress,
If you ever make a mess, I'll do anything for you

I have called you preacher; I have called you son.
If you have a father or if you haven't one,
I'll do anything for you. I did everything for you

I'm sorry to hear about your loss, Dalton. You're in my prayers.
I know Sufjan is a Christian, although he's not a "Christian artist, if you know what I mean. He writes about his faith, but you won't find him in a Christian book store.

"For the Widows" is one of my favorite songs. It's very moving on many levels. On one hand, I think it's about unconditional love. Of course, in its purest form, this comes from God. That's what Grace is. Part of this seems like Christ knowing he has to die to cover our sins:

"Still I must obey, still I must invite.
If there's anything to say, if there's anything to do,
If there's any other way, I'll do anything for you."

"If you ever make a mess, I'll do anything for you."

"I'll do anything for you. I did everything for you."

I don't mean to get overly spiritual on you, but I know that's where a lot of Sufjan's work comes from.

Hang in there. God bless.
