Dropkick Fans... comments and thoughts on my unofficial Best Of
Okay, so this isn't not all that useful for long since the new studio album is due in 3 months, and probably leans too heavily on the material from Singles Vol. 2 since I'm hearing most of it for the first time... but this is my 54 track (plus bonus track) 2 Disc Best of the Dropkick Murphys. I thought about going for one hardcore disc and one folksy disc... but I think the dynamics of the band's sound are best presented with all of it meshed together. All tracks are studio album versions unless otherwise noted.

My list of what I think to be their best would look quite different.
__________________I guess I mainly just wouldnt have virtually any songs from either of those 'singles' cds. By the way, calling those cds 'singles' albums is about as misleading as can be..... |

I rather like the stuff on the Singles Volume 2. At least that one does have the subtitle to clarify the actual content

well that's a huge list for a best of.
I would shorten it to a single disc. My list would look really different, but I know off the top of my head that I would not include "Black Velvet Band" or "Fields of Athenry"-I really don't like their versions of either of those songs. And if you're going to include "The Dirty Glass," I would use the version on their split with Face to Face, I think it's much better. I also think "Buried Alive" is the best track on "Blackout," so I'd include that. If you're going to include covers, I think their cover of "Nobody's Hero" is quite good (and plus, it gives a nod to SLF who are amazing). |

The original one I had was one disc, and it just wasn't enough. I'm a fan of excess.

i'm not the only one!! firestarter karaoke! it's fightstarter, i think. i'm confused as hell right now. all i know is that i had it wrong for years. ![]() i'd leave off "i'm shipping up to boston" ![]() and walk away. and i'd put on 'as one'. actually, i'm going to make my own 2 disc best of now...ah, the power of suggestion ![]() |

I think I'm Shipping Up is funny.
![]() And yes. You're right. It is Fightstarter Karaoke. Wow, I feel rather stupid. I've been calling it that for years and wondering why it was called such |

C'mon, it's a funny track. And it's only a bonus one, not part of the main set.
Like, when I'm on Landsdowne, and I'm lookin' to score... this chick comes up, and I'm like "Hey baby, you wanna boogey?" And she's like, "why don't you buy me a drink....?" |

It is very good, and these discs will go through major revision once the new album is released. (mostly the singles disc tracks will be reduced, and I probably will add "Buried Alive" and take off "Kiss Me I'm Shitfaced". And I think in order to do a Murphys comp, you have to include covers. I know I went overboard, but I love their covers, and they comprise a large portion of their catalog. About a fourth of the tracks on the studio albums if you count the traditional songs, not to mention all the stuff that shows up on singles and comps. |

Well, here is the revamped version with the new album. Singles volume 2 has been considerably reduced now that the newness has worn off. Also, added "Buried Alive" and a few other tracks from other albums, along with stuff from Warrior's Code. I'm very, very, very satisfied with the flow, and there are a few spots I really love for emotional resonance. ("The Last Letter Home" -> "Fields of Athenry"). And I still can't bring myself to get rid of "Tessie," even though I know it's not actually that good... it's fun and it's an important part of DKM history. I used goldwave to edit out the extra stuff on "The Gang's All Here" and "Spicy McHaggis Jig"
Disc One: 1 Cadence to Arms 2 Do or Die 3 Boys on the Docks (original version) 4 10 Years of Service 5 Worker's Song 6 21 Guitar Salute 7 Sunshine Highway 8 Fightstarter Karaoke 9 Wild Rover (Shane M. version) 10 The Gauntlet 11 Road of the Righteous 12 Upstarts and Broken Hearts 13 The Torch 14 World Full of Hate 15 Far Away Coast 16 I'm Shipping Up to Boston 17 The Auld Triangle 18 Finnegan's Wake 19 Which Side Are You On? 20 It's a Long Way to the Top 21 Eurotrash 22 Curse of a Fallen Soul 23 The Spicy McHaggis Jig 24 Walk Away 25 Captain Kelly's Kitchen 26 The Last Letter Home 27 Fields of Athenry Disc Two 1 For Boston 2 Your Spirit's Alive 3 Barroom Hero 4 Gonna Be a Blackout 5 Never Alone 6 Fortunate Son 7 Pipedown 8 Working 9 Buried Alive 10 Caught in a Jar 11 Black Velvet Band 12 Forever 13 The Green Fields of France 14 Kiss Me I'm Shitfaced 15 The Fighting 69th 16 The Rocky Road to Dublin 17 The Warrior's Code 18 The Burden 19 Mob Mentality 20 John Law 21 Billy's Bones 22 Amazing Grace (live) 23 The Gang's All Here 24 The Dirty Glass 25 Good Rats 26 Tessie (with world series clip) 27 Skinhead on the MBTA |

I think that'd be more suited to a Flogging Molly thread... though I do love all three bands. ![]() |
