Allergies do bite...personally I use Zyrtec. It is also a non-drowsy and I think it works better than Claritin, but it usually isn't covered under your formulary. They also make a good allergy eye drop your Doc can prescribe. If it is weeks before you can get in to see the Doc, call the triage nurse line and tell her what it is you are experiencing and what you need. Almost all Doctor's offices keep acute appointments open for people that need to be seen same day that can only be filled within 24 hours.
Everyone is somewhat reactive to dust-mites, molds and spores it just depends on how much you can handle. This year we have a heavy pollen count due to the rain we had the last couple of months.
If you are hyper it is the 'D' component pseudoephedrine. Try regular claritin and only use the claritin D if you are congested.
I suggest. Avoid going out for long times when pollen is high..usually in the morning and when it is windy. Keep your windows closed. Run the air-conditioning if available and change your filter (often). Wash your blankets and pillows. Check to see that your fireplace damper is closed. Shower when you come inside and change your clothing. Remember to bathe your pets too...dander is a No. 1 allergen so if you frequently brave getting the cat wet it helps reduce this and Fido can bring in pollen when he goes out to do his duty. Remove feather pillows and things you might be allergic to from hotel rooms if you travel. I also suggest the non-smoking rooms and restaurants.
