Even without tickets, many ways to see Bono and Judd
BY TOBY MANTHEY / Lincoln Journal Star

No smoke machines.

No jumbo-sized video screens lit up with Pop art motifs.

No prank calls to the White House from the stage.

Bono's scheduled appearance at the Lied Center for Performing Arts on Sunday for the E.N. Thompson Forum on World Issues at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln will likely be a more sobering experience than past U2 concert fare.

And those looking to see the serious side of the rock singer have made this the most popularly anticipated Thompson forum ever, with the possible exception of Mikhail Gorbachev last March. The talk focuses on AIDS in Africa, and actress Ashley Judd also will appear.

Formed in 1976 in Dublin, Ireland, Bono's band U2 is one of the most famous rock groups in history, having won 14 Grammys.

Tickets were snapped up in 17 minutes for the speech, and at least one fan hung flyers in UNL's Oldfather Hall asking for seats.

Annette Wetzel, coordinator of the Thompson Forum, said an average forum attracts 700 to 1,000 people, while the crowd for Bono and Judd should fill the Lied, which seats more than 2,200.

Bill Manning, assistant chief for UNL police, said the crowd and the political nature of the appearance would change security.

"The fact that it deals with international issues means we're going to have more than a couple of officers," said Manning, who said UNLpolice have scheduled on-call deputies from the Lancaster County Sheriff's Office for the event.

No backpacks or briefcases will be allowed in the Lied Center during the lecture, a procedure Manning said will soon be standard for most university events because of post 9-11 concerns. Additionally, those with bulky coats will be asked to open them.

"We don't want any rotten eggs and tomatoes," Manning said of university events.

The forum is scheduled to begin at 7 p.m.

Doors will open at 6 p.m., and ticket-holders must be seated by 6:45 a.m. or others will be admitted in their place.

For those unable to attend, an overflow area will be set up at the Nebraska Union Auditorium. The lecture will also be broadcast live at www.unl.edu, Lincoln cable channel 21, UNL's KRNU (90.3 FM) and UNL campus TV.
