Bono gets approval of Town Council
By Aileen Mulhall
U2 lead man Bono?s humanitarian crusade to free Third World countries from crippling debt has earned him Tramore Town Council?s nomination for the People of the Year Awards.
Independent Cllr. Eddie Walsh put forward the world famous rock star as the figure most deserving of the Council?s nomination for this national award at the local authority?s meeting last week. His proposal received unanimous approval from the Council?s other members.
Cllr. Patrick Munden (PD) pointed out that a serious amount of money had been released from the Third World debt thanks to Bono?s work. On Cllr. Maureen O?Carroll?s suggestion, it was decided not to put forward a second nomination for the People of the Year Awards. She proposed that the Council should make a case for why their nominee deserved to receive an award. Simply putting forward a name and doing nothing else was not enough, she argued.
Other public figures considered for nomination by the Town Council were champion of the poor Fr. Sean Healy and Tony Award winning Waterford actress Anna Manahan. The closing date for nominations for the People of the Year Awards is September 30.
