End of Chapter One **********

His note written, Bono grudgingly left Sadie in the hospitals care and walked down to the van. He so wanted to run right back to her side but as Edge has said maybe she was married or engaged so there was no point wasting the chance of stardom was there.??

Late October 1980

Bono trudged to the bulkhead van his heart heavy at leaving Sadie, Adam and Edge ready to shove him into the back if he tried to run back to her. Bono jumped into the family home, with its wooden bench seat and brown carpet. It was just like being at home, a confined space full of testosterone but he knew that he had to make this family work. It was very uncomfortable but at least all their equipment & bodies could squeeze in.

“Can I drive?” Bono asked as Paul McGuiness shut the back door.

“Noooooooooooo way “was the response from the whole party in unison. “ You never let me drive” Bono’s pleading smile turning to a disgruntled frown.

“Just sit down on your shaft” Larry grumbled trying to make sure Bono knew he wasn’t happy with this afternoon’s diversion. It wasn’t that he was heartless, just didn’t understand Bono’s reaction to Sadie. There was no question Bono had an eye for the girls but why was she different. Why the concern for a girl he didn’t even now. Girls!! That was another thing he didn’t understand. Larry shivered at the thought.

Silence. Bono hated it “So Adam you’re finally going to make it to Amsterdam?”

“Yeah I sure am. Just think all the sex, drugs and rock and roll” Adam grinned trying not to make his plans obvious.

The van headed eastwards to Harwich port. Edge was sitting completing his crosswords, Adam snoring his head off , his mouth open like a Venus fly trap, Larry just staring into space with the ever constant frown .Only Bono wasn’t following his usual pursuit of contemplating , turning his thoughts and feelings into lyrics for his notebook. Larry looked over at Bono, he was lost in his own world and the lyrics were replaced by a repartition of love hearts, Sadie 4 Bono, and just her name all over the pages.

“Well done Bono, you must be so pleased. That’s truly amazing!” Larry quipped.

Edge looked over his paper, hoping that world war 3 wasn’t going to erupt, feeling helpless as Adam was still away with the leprechauns.

“Sorry?” Bono replied entering the realm of reality, not sure if he’d missed some intellectual debate.

“You’ve managed to write the name Sadie. What’s got into you? She’s only a girl you got off the street. You don’t even know her and the way you’re doodling anyone would think you were in love!!” Larry felt better now that was off his chest.

“Why you wanker! “ Bono lunged across the van towards Larry, fists at the ready.

Edge dropped his paper, better get in there before they nutted one another, looking at Adam for support; but he was still conversing with the Fairie folk. Bono went to hit Larry but unfortunately for Edge he got between Bono’s fist and Larry’s face.

“Ahh that was me you gobshite”, yelled Edge throwing a punch getting Bono right in the face.

“What the fuck are you up to in there?” Paul screamed

The van came to a halt and Paul flung the van doors open.

“Right that’s it, all of you out NOW!! We’ll take a break here and you can sort out whatever the hell is going on before we set off again”

He turned and joined Joe O’Herlihy walking into the Little Chef.

Silence. Then as if he knew it was the correct moment Adam groaned, turned over and farted. The boys looked at each other and began to laugh, magically all resentment disappeared.

Edge put his arm around Larry, “Come on Lars, let’s go and see if they’ve got a Space Invaders, leave Bono to calm down.”

As Larry & Edge walked towards the building Bono turned and chuckled as even after all the commotion Adam was still fast asleep.

“Sparky!! wakey wakey!” Bono screamed as he poked Adam.

“Ehhh…what??….did I miss anything?? Where is everyone?” Adam looked puzzled.

“They’re grabbing something to eat, come on. I need a fag, you got any Sparks?”

“Sure” Adam pulled a battered packet out of his jacket pocket and offered one to Bono.

“They are “normal” ones, right?” Bono looked at him anxiously.

“Yeah they are”, Adam replied. As if he’d waste his supply on Bono and the thought of Bono on a high didn’t need thinking about. Adrenaline was Bono’s drug.

“Adam”, Bono always used the boy’s proper name when he was trying to be serious. ”Do you think that love at first sight is possible or just a fantasy those woman magazines make up?”

“Well Bono, I honestly don’t know. It’s not something I’ve really thought about to be honest. We’re only 20 so there’s plenty of time for that serious stuff. I just want to get laid, none of this relationship crap. Why you ask?”

“Well” Bono looked up “I…..” Bono stopped mid track when he heard Larry & Edge returning.

Adam knew Bono wouldn’t respond now, but he has a pretty good idea it was to do with that nice piece they’d rescued earlier. Sadie was that her name? He certainly wouldn’t have passed the opportunity to shaft her, and it seemed the normally promiscuous Bono had been smitten, now this could get interesting…

“All aboard?” Paul shepherded all the boys back into the van. “All sorted now?”

“Sorted what?” Adam looked the others puzzled.

“Yeah we are,” Edge looked at Bono & Larry pleading the peace treaty had been signed, “Right?”

Bono nodded.

Larry looked at Bono and forced his facial muscles to turn his lips into a smile. “Here I got you this” throwing a dodgy motorway service station sandwich at Bono, “I was just trying to be funny!”

“Thanks” Bono held up the soggy cheese sandwich, “and for the record it wasn’t!”

He gave Larry one of his crocked smiles. Serenity returned to the U2niverse.

As the sun rose, and shone its light on the deck Bono began to stir. It had seemed a good idea last night to sleep on the ferry deck. Dawn had brought the harsh reality it was actually freezing cold and the warmth of last night’s alcohol had long warn off. Bono shivered. He had had the most erotic dream about Sadie last night almost boarding on the pornographic. He didn’t need to look down to know that Bono Jr. had been there to; the tightness of his jeans told him that. He unzipped the sleeping bag and swung his legs into the morning chill, where was the others he wondered?

He stood up to stretch, BJ still pulling at his jeans seams to be let loose. A couple of girls walked past, obviously gigging at the sight of his crotch. He’d treat them he thought as he unzipped himself.

“Oh ladies”, and as they turned they were greeted by an Irish full Moon.

“Amsterdam offers visitors a chance to escape to one of the most flamboyant and lively cities in Europe. A weekend in Amsterdam, with its unique and vibrant atmosphere, guarantees visitors a break to remember. Enchanting canals and quaint cobbled streets, with an array of historical treasures encased within its city centre, surround Amsterdam's centre, stretching out from the Dam Square. Colourful houseboats brighten up the canals and the streets are a busy throng of tourists, students and street performers. Amsterdam city breaks are a multifaceted experience, with a welcoming and sophisticated old city of historical treasures, exceptional museums and art galleries. Set beside the hedonistic pleasures of the notorious Red Light District, known for its liberal restraints on the use of marijuana and flamboyant nightlife.”

Edge looked up from his tourist guidebook. He was looking forward to seeing some of Amsterdam. This was the furthest he’d ever traveled from Dublin, one thing worried him though, Adam. What with those coffee houses and the red light district he needed to be kept on a tight leash. At least tonight he wouldn’t have to worry; they were heading out to the KRO studios out in Hilversum. This was a big chance for the band, their first album “Boy” was being released the following week and they needed to get a European following going, so exposure was essential.

“Edge, why didn’t we get a van with windows??” Bono complained.

“Paul got what we could afford that’s why. Why the sudden need for windows?”

“I want to see the windmills & dykes” Bono giggled like a 5 year old boy

Larry rolled his eyes, anyone would think that he was the grown up rather than the baby of the group. Bono was such a big dimwit sometimes.

“Are we there yet?? Bono moaned, “I need to take a lash badly”

Adam knocked on the board “hey Paul, how much longer?”

“We’re there boys, just pulling in now”

As Paul opened the doors Bono was like a greyhound out of a trap behind the nearest bush.

So far so good Edge thought. The set was going well; it was going to be a good one he realized, with a sigh of relief. Bono and the audience had connected, that always made for a good gig, if the audience responded to Bono he responded by upping his performance. He looked down at the set list, oh shit, The Electric Co was next. If there was one thing that set Bono off into a hysteria it was that song, usually he would disappear from view only to rematerialize scrambling up scaffolding or stacks of speakers. He surveyed the surroundings great no scaffolding or speaker stacks; this would be interesting to see how Bono improvise without climbing material.

“We’re from Dublin; we’re a group called U2. We’re glad to be here” Bono panted trying to catch his breath. “This is for the people sitting down in the cinema at least I think they think it’s a cinema, this is called The Electric co…….

Boy, stupid boy
Don't sit at the table
'til you're able to
Toy, broken toy
You shout and shout
You're inside out
'til you don't know... the Electric co.
'til you don't know...the Electric co.

Red, running red
You play for real
Toy could feel
Hole in your head
You go in shock
You're spoon-fed
'til you don't know...the Electric co.
'til you don't know...the Electric co.

Bono looked around the studio. Scaffolding nowhere to be seen, shit.. Speakers no way he could climb those they where too far away, he cursed, fuck this was his moment he needed to get everyone’s attention , all eyes in the building on HIM, he had to improvise and quickly..

He started bouncing vigorously like a psychopath trying to escape his straight jacket. Larry caught Adam’s eye and mouthed “what the fuck is that?” Adam shrugged and turned chuckling to himself.

“I can go, UP, it’s a game we play, a game” Bono yelled.

2,3,4 2,3,4
Hiding inside of myself
You’re in the a crowd
Bring on the crowd
I love the crowd

“UP! UP! UP! JUMP UP” Bono beseeched, the audience hypnotized obeyed in unison.

If you don't know... Electric co.
If you don't know... Electric co.
If you don't know... Electric co

Well that was interesting, a restrained Bono. Edge grinned. It was very rare that happened, he was used to Bono terrifying Paul that was half the fun, Bono winding up Paul.

The recording concluded well with the crowd pleading for more. Paul greeted the boys with a grin on his face, making his satisfaction evident.

“Well done boys. That sounded awesome, we’ll hopefully get a few fans with that. Right let’s get the gear in the van and get to the B&B.”

Paul looked at Bono. He didn’t look well, pale and vacant.

“Bono are you alright?” Paul asked, his face showing concern.

“Yeah I’ll be fine; I just need to get some air.” Bono retorted.

Bono walked to the exit, he needed some space, some time alone. He was still hyped from the performance and he was going insane. Sadie, what had she done to him? Why was she in his head? The only relief he’d had was during the concert, now that was over she was back. It wasn’t a bad thing he just wanted her, needed her, yet he didn’t even know her. What was happening, he didn’t understand. Was this love he was feeling? He arrived at the van, light up a cigarette and leaned on the back door, inhaling deeply. All these complex feelings so alien to him, making his head spin. He’d have to try and concentrate on the job in hand and try and get hold of Sadie when they returned to London. A few more days that was all, until he saw her again.
