popmart stage versus vertigo stadium stage

The friendliest place on the web for anyone that follows U2.

maybe the official specs mean that the vertigo screen should have a higher resolution, but by just looking at both of them, it really appears the popmart screen had a better resolution.

the blocks of light are too spread apart on the vertigo screen.

This is true.

If you were right up close to the PopMart screen then, yeh, you could see the obvious 'pixelated' look to the screen.
BUT the Vertigo screen even looks pixelated from the back of a stadium!!!
The PopMart stage looked like a giant television from most views ESPECIALLY from the back of a stadium.

Look at Chizip's pictures above and there is only one winner - better technology or not.

I'm not sure how the band can avoid any and all daylight in the summer, unless they start their shows at, what, 10 pm?

Of course, the B-stage and the catwalk never got reused.

We should be ok in Australia and NZ. It gets dark at about 7 in March.

Nice picture!

But man, the PopMart screen really is HUGE.
That must've cost them billions.

im pretty sure they bought it too, it wasnt leased like the vertigo screen was.

i wonder which one of them has it as their home entertainment system :hmm:

Ouizy, I think that's the first post of that length that I've actually read the whole way through on Interference.

:tsk:...

and about the moonlighting thing... here is dark about 9... at 10 it's dark in february... the Santiago show started at 10 in 98

Chizip, do you have any more pics of the PopMart screen? They're wonderful! I find it's rather difficult to locate them on the net. This is the best I've managed to find:

yeah but if you look at video from each show you will notice the difference.
Look at the Please(Live from Rotterdam montage version) Video.
There are big flaws that you notice both on that video and when you actually at the show as well. The Panels themselves don't quite synchronise and you can notice them adjusting to each other, Where as with the vertigo screen there is none of that.. Also the refresh rate seems to be far higher on the vertigo screen when you watch videos of the two.

I think your right though the Popmart stage gives more photo quality shots.. but the synchronisation and the refresh rate are definately slower than the vertigo one..
Amzing really for it's time the Popmat show

I've seen both shows: I was in Reggio Emilia in 1997 and at the 2nd show in Milan this summer.

Talking about the stage Pop Mart it's IMHO the state of art. The Lemon, the catwalk leading to the b-stage...
The sound was also great: clear and loud.

I confess that i don't like the outdoor Vertigo setting: I never really liked the half elipse used this summer in Europe and the screen was good but smaller compared to Pop Mart.

I was about 10ft from the barriers (between edge & bono) and the screen was difficult to make out as a whole from that distance, but did allow me to see the actual screen itself in good detail. It seems to me they deliberately wanted it to have gaps between the LEDS.

The screen seems to be made of panels bolted together. These panels are made of further squares which have individual LEDs on them. They are seperated from other squares:

To me it seems quite deliberate in order to create a pixellated effect...ie, not trying to create a giant TV, but a more artistic representation..somewhat industrial.

The screen seperates in order to allow the spotlight operators to shine (and they are so bright!) which is another example of conscious effect despite the fact is seperates the screen in two with a somewhat distracting black bar. The same with the black squares across teh bottom third of the screen used for the flash effects.

Popmart was more of a 'performance production' than Vertigo which is more of a straightforward 'rock production.'
That was a great post but you said it all right there.

Plus Popmart was a stadium only tour, so they really put a lot of work into making it the best for a stadium I think. Of course, they knew beforehand that they were going to play in stadiums on the Vertigo Tour but still the approach was different. One thing however that is better this tour, compared to Popmart, are the videos and images, I know that's not much for many but it is for me. Popmart had awesome videos and images but I think they are more interesting and creative this time around. I mean the combination of colors and videos for City Of Blinding Lights, for example, is just perfect.

I think it's cool to scrutinize each production, but to compare them is kinda useless. It's apples and oranges. As for those pics above...they are taken at different angles and distances. If you took a picture of the Popmart screen from a close distance it wouldn't look great either.

the color capabilities and the resolution of the Vertigo LED panels are technically far superior to those used in PopMart... HOWEVER.. I don't understand why they spread the Vertigo LED Olite 'squares' so far apart... to emulate the inside MiSphere curtains perhaps...

would have been even more amazing had they done a solid outdoor panel with high density of the Olite technology they deployed..

Odd how people who haven't seen the Vertigo outdoor screen from any distance can comment on it like they have. From the seats, the Vertigo screens were brighter and clearer. From the floor, they are both just as pixelated.

POP was about FUN. PopMart was about having a fuckin ball!
To say they just swapped tv screens for one big screen and trabants for lemons and olives actually makes my point.

I thought popmart was about commercialisation & people giving their lives for fame. ie the popmartyrs.

vertigo screen v popmart..... popmart wins every time.

could you imagine if instead of that big pixelated screen for the Outdoor shows, they make one giant led-balls curtain?

What if U2 just transported a huge LCD screen

:) Would you like a 15", 17", or 19" LCD?

:edge: I want a 6000" LCD

 But sir..

:edge: I WANT........ A 6000" LCD

I think just going on terms of cost, PopMart is easily the best screen. It's daft to argue otherwise. In fact, PopMart was ahead of its time by years.

I still fondly remember the second Vertigo from the show I went to. Those screens were so awesome! Especially during the chorus! Where did you get those images by the way?
