I'll say this, as well as "Bull Black Nova" sounding like Jeff fronting Spoon around Gimme Fiction with Nels and Thurston Moore on guitar. I swear some of those lines sound like Murray Street.

And by the way, being yourself or using other bands' elements is TOTALLY NOT a bad thing.

I think it would be a great loss not to have this part of Pieholden Suite:

In the beginning
We closed our eyes
Whenever we kissed
We were surprised
To find so much inside

I can hear a bit of every Wilco album in it, but somehow it's completely different, too. This is the album I knew they were capable of ever since Pat and Nels joined the band.
This is a very good description of how I feel about the album. It really is a tour de force of Wilco's career. It could be the first album we mention when people ask "so, where should I start?". I am by no means a hater of SBS - I think the first half is very, very solid - but from the few listens (The Album) is stronger, more diverse and has more punch. I also like the somewhat self-deprecating and fun tone of the album cover and the first song.

It doesn't have the atmosphere or perfect production of YFH or the experimental beauty of AGIB, but a great album still. Will definitely be on my end of year lists.

I personally consider Tweedy's lyrics on Summerteeth to be his best. That might not be the most popular opinion, but I connect with them the most, and when paired with such enthusiastic music, they take on a whole different meaning.

YouTube - 7 Worlds Collide Part 2- Jeff Tweedy sings Fake Plastic Trees with members of Radiohead & Johnny Marr.

on the second listen now, but i already really love it. i think its a good mix of more recent work. i do wish they would record some of these a little more like the live versions (a little more sprawling and not so neat), but thats what bootlegs are for.

looking forward to seeing these songs.

Really? I've only listened to it twice but I think it's kind of lame.

I'm pretty easy to please. I kinda sorta like everything that anyone has ever done.

That being said, I do think that this is a darn good collection of songs.

Well that's why we like you - you're a very agreeable.

Perhaps 'lame' is too harsh, especially after only two listens. In general, I should not talk about records I've only listened to twice because my opinion usually changes - sometimes for better, other times for worse.

But my first impression is that this is a decent collection of songs but nothing really great, or special. No highs yet. Just kind of Wilco paint-by-numbers. But I can hear that some of these songs are going to kick ass live (duh).

I'll keep listening. I already like it better than SBS so that's a good sign.

I'm sad to report that Jay Bennett died in his sleep last night. No word yet on the cause of death. I've always been most loyal to the current lineup of the band, but this is still horrible news. He was only 46.

Rumors had been floating around online all day, but his record label confirms it here.

I'm going to listen to Summerteeth and Yankee Hotel Foxtrot.

Rest in peace, Jay
