Crooked Rain, Crooked Rain is what I started with. And I think it's a good choice.

Crooked Rain, Slanted & Enchanted, or Brighten the Corners.

Any of those will lead you to the promised land, but Crooked seems to be the one that leads the most people. (I started with Slanted personally)

PS - Hopefully I have removed the "fucking jackass" title.

It's a term of endearment.

Thank you.

And, LM, sorry that I missed your post....I was IMing with Antwaan Randle-El, reminiscing about when he played for a good team. Sorry.

The team that won their division? Yeah, briefly.

I don't know whether to feel honored or insulted that my T.O. pic was appropriated for this thread.

Are we allowed to discuss solo Malk here? Because I still feel that Real Emotional Trash is the best album of 2008 so far.

I think it's totally appropriate and I've been meaning to ask about that actually.

I don't know a damn thing about solo Malkmus. Where should I start?

Also, does he still play Pavement songs live or is that against the code? If I saw Malkmus live and he played no Pavement songs..I think I'd be disappointed.

He does not play Pavement songs normally, though there was one infamous show in Minneapolis or Milwaukee where the Jicks played 3 songs from each Pavement album in reverse, starting with Terror Twilight. I've looked for a bootleg to no avail.

Malkmus played a solo acoustic set at the Pitchfork Festival last year, and broke out a few gems, including Heaven is a Truck, and then Bob N. came out as a surprise guest, and played drums on Trigger Cut and In the Mouth a Desert, and then danced with a roadie while Malk played We Dance alone.

As someone who has seen Pavement 9 times since 1993, and the Jicks 4 times since their inception, I can tell you that the Jicks are a much tighter band from a musical standpoint (especially with the recent addition of Sleater-Kinney's Janet Weiss), and totally bring the goods. SM has more than enough material to give a full show without needing to play any of his Pavement material. Now the Pavement shows were great but you never really knew what you were going to get on any given night.

I would probably start with the first, self-titled solo album, which is pretty catchy and accessible, though a bit slight. The second album, Pig Lib, and the most recent, Real Emotional Trash are both VERY heavy on the instrumental jams, the latter pretty psychedelic. I love SM's soloing, so these albums are like a dream come true for me. If you like Brighten the Corners and/or Terror Twilight you're more likely to appreciate them. The third album, Face the Truth, was recorded mostly alone, so it's not really a Jicks/band album, and is of a more experimental nature. There's some great stuff on there but it's my least favorite.

Good for them. I know if the Skins had to play the Ravens and Bengals twice a year, they'd be completely fucked.

for buying Crooked Rain. Now play it 20 times on multiple pairs of headphones/sound systems and report back.

NSW's lack of a report has me very worried.

"Stone Temple Pilots
they're elegant bachelors
they're foxy to me are they foxy to you?
I will agree they deserve absolutely nothing
nothing more than me."
