In the context of a comparison to K-OS, and his body of work, it surely is a smart thing to say.

In fact, it is THE thing to say. Although, I would qualify "rap" with "most of what gets passed off nowadays as rap".

I don't hate Drake, don't love him either, but this statement is obviously ridiculous.

Has he never heard of the motherfucking BONE THUGS N HARMONY?

Seeing these 90s hip-hop videos in here reminded me of how the artists used to announce who they were in the song itself - like Boyz to Men in that Motown Philly song. That was a clever marketing gimmick.

Lauryn Hill is really the only name that needs to be mentioned here, since she's superlative at both things.

But yes, Mos Def is a better than good singer.

The other examples, though? Missy Elliot can't really sing. And as pointed out yesterday, Andre 3000 is merely passable. Frank Ocean isn't a rapper. Biz Markie can't sing, and no one cares about his rapping.

Frank Ocean's done a bit of rapping, though I wouldn't call him a rapper either. His raps are slow and fluid, in a much lower register.

Frank Ocean - Oldie - YouTube

This is probably still my favourite Odd Future song, features Frank slowly rapping in a low register before going into his singing voice for the chorus

Tyler The Creator - She (feat. Frank Ocean) - YouTube
