IO Poor Comma Usage Abounds

I'm flummoxed over the correct way to use semicolons. I think they're pretty, but I'm also afraid of them.

For example, how can I justify saying, "Jim will never reach his destiny; such an ending is not within his character," when a period will do just as well?

I don't think you can use a semicolon or a period there because "such an ending is not within in his character" isn't independent in that phrasing. I think you need a colon there.

It's not? I thought "such an ending" worked as a noun clause. Thus, my dilemma.

I think that's correct. "Such an ending" basically means "This ending," and that would substitue fine. "This ending is not within his character" is a full sentence and means the same thing as "Such an ending is not within his character." Right?

I love using semicolons.

Why on earth would anyone think this is the proper way to use it?
