Step lightly when you walk on me
Because I'm not ready for the hurt
I never quite learned how to sleep on my stomach,
Instead I lie patiently with my underbelly exposed,
Waiting for the inevitable crush
When the sole of your boot slowly presses the air from my lungs.
I hope I gave you the extra lift you needed
To take you upward and out of this place.
Don't look back at the muddy footprint you left,
Eventually it will match the others, now dried and cracked.
I'll still be here when the next one comes around.
I never quite learned how to stand up.

I've never felt that way before, maybe only once when a jerk two-timed me while I was still very much in love with him. Anyway, I hope your doormat days are over. I don't mean that in a bad tone, kay?

hee hee, foray. Luckily, this one isn't really about me. I suppose there have been times where I've felt a little bit like a push-over. But this is mostly an exaggeration on that moment of vulnerability. Thanks for caring, though!

Do you know Yeats's "He Wishes for the Cloths of Heaven"?

"Tread softly because you tread on my dreams."

Yeats had a terrible time with his relationships but in my opinion he was probably the greatest poet of all time...and also Irish, coincidentally.

No, I wasn't familiar with that one. I'll have to look it up. Thanks, scatteroflight!
