Sad Day! (Haiti Earthquake)

It's a sad day today to know that thousands could have been killed in the Haiti earthquake. My heart goes out to them in this very difficult time! Sometimes we complain about the economy or about our government but some countries get it SOOOOOO much worse. Sad day indeed!

The scale of the disaster is unimaginable. Deaths in the thousands or tens of thousands. How many people are now homeless, or refugees? I have heard reports that all of the hospitals in Port au Prince are destroyed. The country, at its best, has very limited resources and infrastructure.

I am glad to see the United States take a leadership role in rescue and rebuilding -- Haiti will need all the help it can get.

CNN's Gary Tuchman just spoke with the prime minister of the country at the airport -- the PM says he thinks the death toll will be in the hundreds of thousands.

Work just asked for volunteers for possible "immediate deployment" to Guantanamo Bay (which i assume would be the base and we'd fly into Haiti) to assist.

I just volunteered an hour ago, so we'll see what happens.

That's awesome of you, bigjohn, good luck and be safe.

I read that someone buried in the rubble is texting for help.

Oh man. It must've been fucking huge if the seismographs here in Holland registered the shock! My heart goes out to the people and their families.

Good for you

If I could go there and help in some way, I would in a heartbeat.
