Elections in Europe - This time: Germany

Yes, it's the time of year again where we go into our chambers to cast our vote. The choice as always: The sleeping hand the slow hand or the sleeping hand, that holds the slow hand tightly (yes, our politicians seem to like hands metaphors).

At the moment it is looking as if we were going back to the 16 years (that's two times Bush) of Schwarz-Gelb (Black-Yellow, standing for the colours of our political parties. In this case the Christian Democratic Union/Christian Social Union together with the Free Democratic party. In other words, Conservatives and (Neo-)Liberals).
Germans are a crazy bunch as you can see in the fact that we are headed back towards the 16 years of terrible nothingness, where this guy unaffectionately called pear was ruling our country and virtually nothing happened because of him. He just happened, by accident of history, to be in place when the Socialists in the East showed how much they were worth (actually more than we are now when you compare the rates of debt, but still nothing) and thus let himself be celebrated as the Chancellor of the Reunion. Well, he couldn't do much wrong back then, as the important decisions were made by others and he just had to keep the balls low. But nevertheless, effective PR has disguised from the fact, as well as from the sad reality that in the aftermath so much was done terribly, and quite calculatedly, wrong in favor of political gains. Only to keep the promise that we could pay the reunion out of our pockets, which in fact was the pensioners' fund. But well, he also promised flowering fields in East Germany and if you take a look around he achieved quite that.

And now we are sitting here facing the inevitable. Both parties are set to run our government again for another at least four years which will set us back even further. Had it not been for these parties, Germany might have discovered the digital age before quite recently.
Lead by Angela "Angieeeeee!" Merkel (she really uses that song for campaigning. But well, in her audiences there will only be one or two people who actually understand the lyrics) and a clown going by the name of Guido Westerwelle of the FDP I will probably cringe another four years every time Germany appears on the international political stage.

I thought I might just open a thread about it as I know there is one or two on here who might be interested.

If you have any questions, please don't hesitate to ask. Otherwise, thanks for the attention. You were a lovely audience.

Was Kohl referred to as Pear? I didn't know that.

Yes, the shape of his head lead one journalist to call him "Pear" and that term stuck with him.

Do you call those that disagree with you "Nazis" "Brownshirts" "Herr Hitler" or "Goosestepping Swastika Wavers" like we do here? Or do you actually just debate the issues?

No, we have matured and try to stick to the issues. And we have enough dickheads left to refer to with that name.

Well, okay, in case of our Minister of the Interior we sometimes call him Wheelchair-Goebbels. But that's more than just disagreeing, it's actually fearing his tendency to have total disregards of the achievements of the Grundgesetz, our Constitution.

I see your finance minister had a piece in the Financial Times. I think that like most politicians, he does not understand the reasons for the financial crisis, and is going for the easy reaction of more taxes.

FT.com / Comment / Opinion - Tax trades to share the costs of the crisis

I received the text of the proposed amendments to the Irish constitution today (with regard to the second referendum due to take place Friday week) Having being veering towards a Yes vote in recent months, I am now inclined to vote No again.

I have heard that most people in Germany were aghast at the Irish No vote the first time around. Is this a correct perception?

His desire is to have a balanced household and I think he drops a tear over every cent of debt we have. So yes, he is hoping to raise some money. And such a tax is quite popular at the moment. I'm not as deep in the financial markets etc. as to have confidence in qualitatively discuss the tax. But I agree, our politicians altogether avoid the questions around the crisis pretty effectively and come up with simple, often times populist solutions.

No, I think the perception is not entirely right. It is true that our politicians were quite aghast, but the public was, in tendency, rather in favour of the No. We are quite pissed off that we didn't get the right to hold a referendum, and the constitution as it is wouldn't pass a public vote. So we rather welcomed the Irish to stop the EU Constitution from going unhindered.
But we had some politicians who suffered from severe foot-in-mouth disease.

I did not know that too. I think Kohl as a whole looks like a peak.

I mean I can't stand this stupid face Westerwelle, but I have to say the pens they are giving out as presents work great. Actually I went back to this stand to get another one.
I can't wait to see him and other great people like Pofalla (one of my fav. politician) as environment minister...etc.
