If anyone wants some time to kill, it'd be interesting to see an aggregation of the results on this thread. Y'know, 11 points for #1, 10 points for #2, 9 for #3 etc, and then average them all out. Gives a better idea about how people feel about songs than simple polls for favorite/least favorite.
Well, if you insist.
I compiled the first 124 posts in this thread and averaged the rankings out. I didn't use a point system, simply the average ranking amongst posters. Here's the list, and then I'll offer a few comments of my own.
Magnificent - 2.79
Moment of Surrender - 3.29
Unknown Caller - 4.89
No Line on the Horizon - 5.27
Breathe - 5.62
FEZ-Being Born - 6.26
Crazy Tonight - 6.52
Stand Up Comedy - 6.91
White as Snow - 7.69
Cedars of Lebanon - 7.88
Get on Your Boots - 8.20
Couple notes...
• Magnificent is a clear #1. Moment of Surrender is a clear #2. After that the gap tightens.
• I'm not surprised Get on Your Boots is last. I am surprised it's last by a notable margin. I only say that because it felt like Cedars was at the bottom of a lot of lists - and it was - but I think I misjudged it because of a stretch in the middle where Cedars was either 10th or 11th on 7/8 ballots. That surprised me.
• I'm also surprised at the significant gap between Stand Up Comedy and White as Snow. It just seemed like Stand Up Comedy was receiving nearly as many low votes, but in looking at the spreadsheet it definitely makes sense. Like Cedars, White as Snow had a couple stretches where it grabbed seven or eight bottom votes in a row.
• Magnificent has 43 1st Place votes. Moment of Surrender has 29.
• Magnificent falls outside the Top 4 only 16 times. That's 87% of responders with it in the top third(ish) of the album. Not surprising, but still impressive. For comparison, Moment of Surrender falls out of the upper third 42 times (66% success rate).
• Get On Your Boots is the only song to have not been rated #1 by anyone, unless I missed one. Cedars of Lebanon only has one such ranking thus far.
I'll keep updating this for a while as more come in (the biggest part of the legwork is done now). It also might be something to come back to in 6-12 months and see how things have changed. If I were to take a guess at what song might move the most over time I would suggest Breathe. Perhaps not enough to overtake NLOTH, but I think its score could rise. Not that it's ranked especially low, but there are an awful lot of 8+ scores for it. I think the verses are unusual enough to make it a little tricky at first, but the chorus is too good to ignore and could cause it to grow in stature. On the other hand, what do I know?
Personally, I think White as Snow is terrific and it has a lot more room to move than Breathe, but I don't think a song in that style is ever going to gain huge traction.
