1994-1995

Hello everyone,

Every now and then I get obsessed with a particular period in the band's history. I'm currently captivated by the obscure 1994-1995 years in which I believe U2 could have become a dub reggae band, if you know what I mean

I would appreciate so much if you can help me find any visual evidence for a project I have in mind.

Thanks a million.

There are some great Adam photos in the thread I requested a few weeks ago for 93-94 Adam. Seriously hot times for him.

Here's a video link that I think of as a pair of newborn kittens trying to roll out of bed- hilarious, a little pathetic but also delightful

And from the opening of The Kitchen in the basement of their hotel, the Clarence.

Do you have a copy of U2 by U2? In it Edge says of their time in the south of France, "Bono and I call it our summer of love, but it lasted a year."

I don't know about 'visual evidence' of them becoming a dub-reggae band but there are more 1994/1995 Passengers era pics in the thread linked below:

Thanks a lot for not letting this thread be forgotten.

The dub reference is only related to Bono inducting Bob Marley into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame... oh and to the obvious ganja influenced atmosphere of those post Zooropa years that motivated the Passengers album and the underrated Pop. I know many people discard the idea of the band enjoying some spliffs, but you just have to watch the whole "Free Your Mind" thing to realize something funny was going on... Taste is the enemy of art. That's what happens when you mix Paul Oakenfold, Jon Pleased Wimmin and Howie B among others.

Why do they discard the idea of spliffs? Lord knows they enjoy a little alteration with alcohol, and Adam said openly that he smoked a LOT after quitting drinking.

Also, could you find more about the band in this period by checking out Morleigh's career, or Gavin and Guggi?

Not sure on the date on this one, but they're at the beach and Michael Hutchens was there, so it looked right.

It's not a case of 'discarding the idea'. That isn't to say that one or more band members hadn't 'partaken' of the ganja. But, there just doesn't seem to be very solid evidence of marijuana being motivating force for Passengers and/or Pop.

This might be a good place to ask, has anyone identified exactly when Edge got rid of the ponytail? He had it at the opening of the Clarence in early 94 and it was gone by San Remo in 1995... if that's not way to obsessive a question?

I think I have it down as somewhere between July 1995 to November. But I also think it might have been as early as Sept 1995 because I thought there was a picture of Edge at a different event. This might be the San Remo thing you mentioned. You'll have to refresh me on what that was.

The first clip is our favorite Bono and Edge drunk moment. From what I remember it was from the summer of 1995. You can sort of tell that Edge is at the very start of the pornstache but still has a ponytail.

Totally love the drunk Amnesty party interview. Wish it didn't cut off where it does Well, we say drunk...

That feels really nice, doesn't it? Doesn't it, The Edge?
It certainly does. It feels really nice.

I was wrong, the event I'm thinking of was in Modena, September 1995. He seems to have the full Pop look going on already, way earlier than I thought.

ah yes.... I can't believe I forgot about the Modena concert. I knew there was something in September of 1995! I used to listen to One from this over and over. San Remo was 2000. Anyways, so yep, it must have been about August 1995 that he made the big change.

So glad I'm not the only obsessive in the room! I'd love to know what precipitated that change.

I was in that Amnesty Party. It was pathetic to see how Lisa Stansfield thought she was a superstar and then everyone ignored her. Those were the crazy days when we used to go to Bono's house ala stalker way in order to show him our shitty demos (sic). I can definitely tell you they were fun times indeed... at least for me.
