Native Son lyrics

NATIVE SON

Yeah, it's on the street
It's under your feet
It's everywhere
But if you're looking so free, don't look at me
My inner-me became my country

(On the run)
Officer, put down the gun
(Native son)
I never wanted to own one
(Native son)
If both of us want to be someone
(It's so hard)
Is it so hard for a native son to be free, free

Tears falling from the sky
Falling to the ground
Bullets start to fly, he's hurt
He's in the dirt
On my word (work), I did not take his life...

Don't want to run away
This is the land my fathers graced
I know I can't stay
If I stay I know what's to come

(On the run)
Officer, put down the gun
(Native son)
I never wanted to own one
(Native son)
If both of us want to be someone
(It's so hard)
Is it so hard for a native son to be free, free

Yeah yeah yeah yeah!
Yeah yeah yeah yeah!
Yeah yeah yeah yeah!

Free!

(On the run)
Officer, put down the gun
(Native son)
I know I wanted to own one
(Native son)
Both of us want to be someone
(It's so hard)
Cause it's so hard for a native son to be free, free
Free

Hey, hey, hey, hey!

I am almost positive these are all right!

So I guess this is the early version of Vertigo about gun control that's mentioned in the Time magazine article...that Lillywhite thought was so horrible. I think your lyrics sound accurate, but I'm hearing this in the first verse...

But if your looking for free, don't look at me
My enemy became my country

Murray, mind if I use these on my site? I'll most definitely give you credit.

Sure, change what you want, though!

Yeah, it's definitley

But if you're looking for free, don't look at me
My enemy became my country

And The Edge sings the part "I don't want to run away..."

And I am still not sure if it is "on my word" or "on my work"

I vote for "on my word."

what is the meaning of this song? Is it about Ireland? Gun control?

Any insight or opinions would be great.
