Are U2 really the "biggest band" in the world?

The friendliest place on the web for anyone that follows U2.
If you have answers, please help by responding to the unanswered posts.
Salome wasn't talking about sales, anyway.
indeed, I didn't think I was talking in riddles
even if the next U2 will end up selling only 50 copies then it will still be after everyone and their pet hearing about it and having an opinon about it
and even 50% of the people who think it's shite will consider getting concert tickets

U2 is not the biggest band because I say so
they're the biggest band because they create more general interest than any other band

I would say U2 can be considered “the biggest band on the planet” based on 3 criteria:

1 - Relevance
2 - Album Sales
3 - Ticket Sales

When you add these three factors together you get your magic number...

The problem is I don't think you can put a number on relevance. Relevance to who? What gender? What age? What race? What country?

"The biggest band on planet"? Are they the biggest in Africa? The Middle East? Asia? If they aren't the biggest in the largest population centers, how can they be the biggest in the world?

The whole thing is ridiculous becomes there are far too many variables involved.

uh...the phrase is "...the biggest band on the planet" - not referring to anywhere in particular...

If U2 are the biggest band on the planet, how come they've only played about thirty different countries?

Think about that one!

Because, other countries' people will not afford the cost of a U2 concert as

well as the logistical support. This is why U2 are the BIGGEST BAND.

I'll state it again...the only reason this is even being discussed in the first place is because BONO'S THE ONE WHO STARTED CALLING U2 THE "BIGGEST BAND IN THE WORLD". If he had never said that, and i for one wish he never had, this wouldn't even be a topic of conversation. This made up title exists in Bono's head, and you are all (well most of you) believing it.

Oh yeah, South Korea is such an impoverished country.

The only way they can keep the lights on is through Bono's philanthropic efforts.

"Not referring to anywhere in particular..." except the planet.

Let's do some math:

Is U2 the biggest artist in China?
Is U2 the buggest artist in India?

That's around 2.5 billion people.

Is U2 the biggest artist in Indonesia?
Is U2 the biggest artist in Pakistan?

That's another 400 million people.

Is U2 the biggest artist in Russia?
Is U2 the biggest artist in Nigeria?

That's almost another 300 million people.

That totals out to over 3 billion people. Those countries combined population is only 46.89% of the world's population.

The combined percentage of the world's population of countries that U2 has often toured must be huge. Right? Actually, it is only 17.169%. Definitely the biggest band on the planet.

Your bitterness towards U2 makes you say the most stupid things.

even if they only toured 2% of the planet they would still be the biggest band in the world if no one else creates more interest in concert tickets (if you feel like restricting a band's appeal to the number of concert tickets sold that is) worldwide

it's not that difficult to understand if you want to

Okay let me get this straight, because I think the idea that U2 is the biggest band in the world is absurd and really making that claim of any artist is, is a sign of bitterness towards the band? :eyebrow:

What have I said that is stupid? The facts speak for themselves. The band has often toured places that combined aren't close to a 1/4 of the planet's population. That shows that the claim of being the biggest band on the planet is insane. I'm be realistic here.

I bring up places that they have often toured because that means there is a huge interest in those places. Ticket sales are an iffy judge for a global because of where you play. Europe has a lot of outdoor stadiums while the US has more arenas. So if you play Europe more than the US you may end up selling more tickets because of the difference in venue size.

duuude....you cannot be serious right now............

I was reading an article in this months Q magazine. It was about AC/DC. In the article, it sed AC/DC have outsold u2 by a comfortable 30 million albums. So i got to thinking, on what grounds are u2 often touted as the biggest band on the planet?

Comulative album sales over an entire career is more of a statistic for who are the biggest bands of all time, NOT who is currently the biggest band in the world.

For that, you have to look at the most current concert tour performance and the performance of their latest album of all new material.

U2's last album of all new material sold over 9 million copies
AC/DC's last album of all new material sold 3 million copies.

U2's last concert tour of the world grossed $389 million dollars.
AC/DC's last concert tour of the world did less than $150 million dollars.

Essentially, U2 is at least 3 times more popular than AC/DC worldwide currently.

AC/DC has never been able to do a tour like this:

Oh yeah, South Korea is such an impoverished country.

And I also add to that.... good taste of music. In South Korea, i think majority of the people only hear bubblegum pop. So for a band like U2
with such high standard of quality of music, it is simply embarrasing to go
there. If I am wrong, you can tell me straight and I will make apology.

Otherwise, I will stand by my comment.

Okay, Rob. Tell me, what is wrong with my argument?

I will answer for Rob......

Two words: Bad Taste. The majority of the people of thecountries you mentioned don't have good taste in music. Take it from me because I live in
one of those countries. They either hear boyband or vengaboyz type of music
or songs of sexy ladies who show themselves off in the music video.

Umm...who decides what is good taste or bad? You are also describing what is popular in the US, UK and a lot of the other countries U2 are big in. They have boybands and "sexy ladies" too.
