I too find this creature irrestible but I am unaware of his origin. I saw the ZooTV outside broadcast as was blown away. I was almost unnerved to see MacPhisto sing with or with out you. Give me details...

Look...look what you've done to me...You've made me poor and infamous, and I thank you...

My name is MISS MACPHISTO...I'm tired and i want to go HOME...

"Well you tell...Bonovista,that i said hello and that my codename is Belleview" - Bono before opening night of Anaheim Elevation concert

Well, there's a passage explaining it in U2 at the End of the World (which should be required reading for every U2 fan) that I don't have the patience to type out right now, so if you get a chance you should read that book.

But, what it comes down to is Gavin Friday gave Bono a pair of gold platform shoes, and Bono used them to help build an idea for a character to replace the Mirrorball Man for the encores in Europe. Since MM was the "preacher stealing hearts at a traveling show" Bono & co figured his alter ego would be the devil. This was combined with the character of an aging British cabaret star and the jerky motions of some strange old performer Bono and Edge had seen in Spain, and voila! MacPhisto!

He also took some inspiration from CS Lewis's The Screwtape Letters, in which a senior Devil (Wormwood) tries to teach a junior Devil how to tempt and corrput the man assigned to him. Through it of couse Lewis is teaching US about the frailties of the human heart. It's a brilliant, funny piece of theology and psychology that I'm so proud of Bono for incorporating. GO B-MAN!

(Hey, I love him for his mind.

Oh, yeah, SD, you're right! And that reminds me of the part of the HMTMKMKM video where Bono becomes MacPhisto -- that is, Bono's hit by a car driven by Gavin Friday while he (Bono) is distracted because he's reading the Screwtape Letters!
