Whether Vertigo was what Bono was refering to or not...

Maybe (no, surely) I'm in some vertiginous trance listening to it endlessly,
but I've lived a little while and it's just the fucking paragon of what
a rock song should be!!!

At first I kept hearing all this punk-y clashy ramone-y populist call-and-response stuff in it...
and then the next 50 listens I got the full blast of the Who-y
synth-y screaming guitar-smashing stuff..
and then it hit me how the range of vocal work Bono does
is totally what a rock song should do...

it bounces me up and down and then it sweetly kicks me and rolls me around (showing me hooow-ow-ow-ow-ow to kneeeel)

and after Edge and Adam and Larry kill me with their sound
Bono tells me how I died and
then whispers in my ear the demands...

It's totally spending me and then I want more!

I don't care if Roger and Pete are mates of Edge...The Who rock and all, but
I've never felt so much like playing and smashing a guitar
listening to their stuff as I do with
Vertigo! It's so immediate and accessible and

U2 will take over the Universe with this song!

Vertigo will either be born into a classic or die out after this album depending on what happens with it live.

vertigo is great and all, but let's hold off before we put it in "won't get fooled again" category.

Sorry but for me it already *is* in the "won't get fooled again" category!

Sure it doesn't have that generational anthem shit happening, but unfortunately that generation surely got fooled again

Vertigo certainly has a lot of the same goodness as in The Who's stuff...and then some, I think!

music has changed since WhosNext, and sure Vertigo is more pop-y (as in top 40) but for me that doesn't take away from it's fab-ness as a rock n roll song.

I can feel it...
Vertigo will be loved by people listening to a lot of mediocre new rock bands *and* folks like my hubby who used to live to Baba O'Reilly and Behind Blue Eyes!

And not to rag on the Who...they're fab and all...but you, or maybe just I, don't need to get trashed to fall deeply into Vertigo..

I gotta run and go listen to it in my car again...
my favorite place for it, but it makes me such a danger on the roads!
Not from speeding, but from just getting so lost in it!!!

many cheers all!

I agree with Vertigo being the mother of all rock songs. It has a spirit in it that some rock songs today don't have ie. Jet. Its doing really well in mainstream rock and compared to other U2 songs its the fastest I heard since the song WIRE from The Unforgettable Fire.

It may be the song Bono was talking about when he heard Edge had started a sound in full throttle. Their is a chance that this song was Full Metal Jacket/Native Son. The lyrics referring to the boys playing rock and roll as they did their bomb raids could refer to the idea Native Sons of America in another country. Also a Full Metal Jacket is a rifle stocked and cocked, ready to be used. Again the reference of shooting toward the sky;

The night is full of holes
Those bullets rip the sky
Of ink with gold
They twinkle as the boys play rock and roll
They know that they can't dance
At least they know

Maybe, Maybe Not.

speaking of that whole Full Metal Jacket Native Son thing,

if Vertigo = that bit,

then I think it was totally the right way to go to lose that title and make it this instead.

For people my age anyway Full Metal Jacket and Native Son have too much Vietnam and confederate flag in it, too much baggage that I wouldn't want
to have cluttering
this fucking stunning song...

cheerio all!

WRONG.....

a full metal jacket is the casing around a bullet that happens to be pretty long in order to hold more powder for farther distances

i dont think Vertigo should be compared to Baba O'Riley, behind blue eyes, and wont get fooled again, considering theyre all classics. vertigo was released less than a week ago...
dont get me wrong, i love Vertigo, but time will tell....

I know I know it can't be a *classic* yet, but it will be:yes:

it can't be a classic because its only a week old. That being said, I haven't been into a song this much in years. It's absolutely incredible, I've heard it like 500 times and I like it more and more each time I listen to it. I think the lyrics by Bono are great.

yeh sure, you just wanted an excuse to draw a vibrator using punctuation!

vertigo will never be remembered. it is not a great song, and wont have relivence. it's like "Elevation". just a commercial single to sell an upcoming album. can't be described as the "mother" of anything, especially not of all rock songs. The Who's songs are the best rock songs, just pure classics. I still like "Vertigo" though, don't get me wrong!

I love you and the Who and Vertigo is the mother of all rock songs...it is just so not elevation, not that I don't like elevation!

But that's another thread I guess...elevation v vertigo.
I should probably go over there now and stop making trouble here..
sorry..

cheers!
