This is just so heartbreaking I had to share it.
Today we have had one of the most tragic funerals in Sweden. It was a 27 year old girl from Turkey, Fadime, that have the last five years been chased, threatened to death by her father and younger brother because she fell in love with the wrong guy, a swede, and by that put shame over the family. According to their culture her father or any male relative is allowed to therefor kill her, an action called murder of honour (something like that, don't know the exact translation) simply to get rid of the one who put shame over the family to bring back the honour to the family. Finally after all these years and tries he made it. Two weeks ago he killed his own daughter with shots in the head.

Today was the funeral. The whole arrangement was beautiful but culminated and made every single person in and outside the curch to cry, it was when her best friends, instead of trying to say something, simply played Fadime's favourite song, One. They gathered around the couffin(?) and took each others hands and said their last farewell to their friend to the beauty of U2's music and Bono singing out the beautiful lyrics to One, and they echoed far outside the church. I don't think I can find a more suitable situation then what happened today for One to be played at.

You can watch it in Real video here: http://tv4.se/media/ram/tv4nyh0204fadime1.ram

The world can be a really, really ****ed up place.

The father got away with it because it was in their culture???

I'm sorry but that is one ****ED up culture. The father should be locked up the rest of his life.

That's horrible.

Nothing is set what will happen to her father, it's still in trial. The government at least has started to understand that they have to be more strict of what is allowed and not allowed to do if you want to live in Sweden. And specially that we have to focus more on the girls and women that are harassed by the men because they want to live their own lives. The problem is, I think, that these men doesn't care and will continue killing there daughters even if they will go to jail.

The clip by the way is just from the moment when they played One, take a look, it's beautiful.
The curch was decorated with over 10000 over her favourite flower, all white, donated by Euroflorist and a newspaper here.

What I find is amazing is the range of U2's music, yesterday to be played at Super Bowl, a very commercial event and today at a very contradicted event, a funeral of a curd woman in the swedish christ church with represants from teh governemtn and from our royal family, this has touched the entire country.

MissZooropa, as you know I have already posted my opinion on this matter in another forum, so let me just say how deeply sorry I am that these things still happen to innocent young girls.

That clip was beautiful!! It literally brought me to tears!! My heart breaks for her and her friends.. What a senseless act. It just makes my heart heavy..That song is so beautiful and perfect for that situation.

I hope they prosecute her father and brother for that..I don't care if that's their culture..They are not living in turkey..They need to abide by the laws of the country they live in.

Gawd, the way those middle-eastern countries treat their women is just barbaric! I just don't get it..

Peace..and thanks for bring this to our attention Miss Zooropa!
