1/1: U2 and longtime Irish TV personality, Gay Byrne, place a Harley Davidson motorcycle the band had given him up for auction has part of a fund raiser for The Children's Medical & Research Foundation at Our Lady's Hospital for Sick Children in Crumlin. During the auction announcement, Adam Clayton mentions that U2 plans to release a new album and tour in 2003. The winning bidder at ?30,000 was Irish businessman Harry Crosbie, owner of a Vicar Street music hall. Crosbie will display the motorcycle at the venue at a special Irish music even he is planning.

1/2: American renegade social satirist Michael Moore?s latest docu-flick ?Bowling for Columbine? overtakes U2?s 1989 film ?Rattle and Hum? as the number one documentary of all time at the Australian Box Office.

Former Black Flag singer, sometime actor, and spoken word artist Henry Rollins launches a media critique of Bono?s Third World Debt relief and AIDS efforts: stating that he believes Bono is taking on too much, and that it all seems to be promotional work for the recent U2: The Best of 1990-2000 album.

90. U2 performs a halftime set at the 2002 Super Bowl as a backdrop scrolls the names of September 11 victims, February 3.

1/15: Lola Cashman, former stylist to U2, criticizes the band after she is haulted from auctioning off items the band gave to her throughout her employment in order to pay her personal debts. Cashman risks a lawsuit if she continues with her plan of action through auction house Christie?s. Items involved in the row include concert t-shirts and coffee mugs said to be worth thousands of dollars. Her plans are currently on hold until a mutual agreement can be reached between Cashman and U2.

1/19 - U2 wins their first Golden Globe for Best Song From A Motion Picture for "The Hands That Built America (Theme From Gangs of New York).? Bono and Edge were on hand to accept the award from Elton John. Earlier in the night, Bono introduced a film clip of ?Gangs of New York? - which was nominated for Best Film - Drama. After the show, Bono and Edge were interviewed by E!, and Bono was razzed by the hilarious Robin Williams for his rather eloquent verbal faux pas. (For those who didn't watch, Bono said "This is really fucking brilliant," when he was handed the Golden Globe).
US Magazine notes that Bono received the loudest cheers from fans on the red carpet.
