War Child
I'm gonna make this as quick and painless as possible.
There is a fundemental problem with the current music industry. Doctor Who made some very interesting arguments that grabbed my attention in his "death of the single" thread. I started thinking about this and the internet and napster and U2 and, oddly enough, the current "crisis" facing the the braodband industry and was thinking...how are these linked? Well, bear with me but...
1. the single is dying, people are looking for ways to get the music they want without spending mega bucks for an album full of crap, so they go to napster/nutella/mp3.com etc.
2. the majority of napster users were, as far as I could tell, college students (and people at work) with ethernet access which made napster very easy to use.
3. napster dies, industry goes after free mp3 sites.
4. the average joe doesn't have broadband at home, broadband is not expanding like the industry hoped, technical issues all around.
5. colleges and businesses are blocking certain sites (i.e. mp3 sites) to prevent overload of their internet access.
6. the music industry, trying to capitalize on a "new" market, begins offering music over the internet for $$$$ but the problem is.....
7. without high speed access it's f-ing pointless.
8. so there is no market for them and their going to end up with their thumbs up their asses.
and finally....
9. u2.com is a perfect example of a website built for highspeed access (even the html version) which is becoming more and more common on the internet today even though not many people have broadband at home which is one reason that the internet will continue to not integrate into people's home life the way some thought it would.....
I have no idea if any of that makes sense but it did in my head a few minutes ago....
