Smile -What does it mean?

Is there any information about what Bono means here. I love the song, but am curious-usually you WANT to see someone smile.
Is it about a relationship gone wrong, but the "singer" still wants that relationship, and doesn't want to be humiliated??

I think it's just about not wanting to see the person that broke your heart happy, you want them to be sad about the break up as well...
