Shuttlecock XXV: Cool Hats Club

The friendliest place on the web for anyone that follows U2.

Actual conversation with coworker yesterday:

Coworker: u2 sucks
Me: Why?
Coworker: They put that shitty album on my phone.
Me: I know, that was bad. Don't mind me asking, but how did that personally affect you?
Coworker: I use Spotify, so I never listened to it.
Me: Oh, so you never had an issue where if you started to play music in your car, it would automatically start playing or anything like that?
Coworker: No.
Me: Oh, then curious, why are you so mad at them about putting the album on your phone?
Coworker: It was just a shitty thing to do.
Me: I agree, glad to hear that it didn't affect you personally. What do you think about their music in the 80's and 90's?
Coworker: It's ok I guess. New Years Day is really good.
Me: Yeah, so is everything from the 80's and 90's. You should check it out.
Coworker: Nah, they suck.
Me: Ahhhh you were conditioned by society to think that.
Coworker: Huh?

If I really, really think about it I find it despairing, but I've also got so, so, so many other artists that I love dearly who are releasing great music all the time that thinking about why U2 keep releasing bad music is just eliciting unnecessary suffering.

Nick Cave. Since I became a fan in 2013 everything he's released since has been either the equal or greater, and he lives so in the present and is so embodied in what he's creating, that I've barely touched his back catalogue.

Experience is awful, but it at least has three or four tracks that I enjoy. Innocence has one, maybe two at a stretch, and has the added benefit of being the reason that everyone on the planet hates them!
I will disagree on SOI. Really solid album but just doesn't have any songs that really stick out. But front to back, it's really strong, and the tour was really good. But yeah, buried by the stupid Apple thing.

9 months ago: Kamala should go on Joe Rogan's show!

now: eww Bono went on Joe Rogan's show!

lol.

PS: nobody should ever go on Joe Rogan's show.

I went to see Inhaler last night. Thought they were fantastic. Great energy, great musicianship. Eli's got an awesome stage presence. At points sounded like Bryan Adams on "Heaven". His vocals, and listening to some of their recorded output, are a little polished for my tastes, but very enjoyable nonetheless, and they sound terrific live. It was an all-ages event, and they've carved out a passionate, young audience. It was funny being there as a 34-year-old, and just thinking about U2 the whole time. Wish I'd had another nerd there. "Oh this is their So Cruel, oh that's like Live Aid 1985..."
