Seeking help for my sick turntable

Anyone know anything about repairing turntables? Mine isn't working right. It either won't run at all or the sound is way lower and slower than it is supposed to be. I bought it used but it came with the manual. The troubleshooting section told me I needed to adjust the belt so it is on the center of the pulley. I did it, following the diagram exactly, and for a split second it seemed to work and then the sound went all screwy again.

I thought this might be a good place to ask for help because I believe there are a few other freaks like me around here who actually own turntables.

If all else fails go to a record shop (if one still exists near you) and ask.
