And to complete, reminds us all of POE and Grace...

- Focus on the lyrics
- Focus on how the song came about
- Focus on matching the lyrics to the meaning
The music will follow. That helped me appreciate it more.

It's not like i'm gonna cook something.
It's music. And a bad one.
Why not Mercy in its place!

Boring, uninspiring...bad vocals (Bono's trying to be Lou Reed...listen the way he "sings" busy intersection), bad music.
And to complete, reminds us all of POE and Grace...
What were they thinking...
The album is great but this song...

Michael Griffiths said:I couldn't contain myself when I read someone saying that 'Mercy' (if that's truly what it is) is better than 'One Step Closer'. While 'Mercy' is a great, great B side (right up there with 'Lady with the Spinning Head'), it lacks a sustained hook. It would make a great pre-87 track back when U2 had tracks like that...but does not live up to their current standards, though it is brilliant lyrically. 'One Step Closer', however, could very well be the strongest song on the album, and is possibly U2's most couragous and honest song to date. It's the album's centerpiece and its most important song thematically. Daniel Lanois' perfectly orchestrated production shimmers through the track and Bono strips himself bare. Not since The Joshua Tree have we heard Bono this naked, nor U2 this stark. There is really no comparison.
