OSC...it's not "growing". Actually i dislike it even more.

The friendliest place on the web for anyone that follows U2.

It sucks...

Boring, uninspiring...bad vocals (Bono's trying to be Lou Reed...listen the way he "sings" busy intersection), bad music.

And to complete, reminds us all of POE and Grace...

What were they thinking...

The album is great but this song...

Three things...

  • Focus on the lyrics
  • Focus on how the song came about
  • Focus on matching the lyrics to the meaning

The music will follow. That helped me appreciate it more.

It's not like i'm gonna cook something.

It's music. And a bad one.

Why not Mercy in its place!

Cook?

OSC > Mercy. Mercy is definitely b-side material.

I seriously disagree, and what the hell's wrong with Lou Reed? I like it when Bono puts a little Reed-talk-twang in his voice...but anyway I think it's a very relaxing song, good for reflecting on things, and it has a nice atmospheric feel. Reminds me of Miss Sarejevo.

Anyway, your opinion. If you don't like it, cool. I do think Mercy is a better song though... the more I listen to Mercy the more I love it

Why create a thread to say the same thing you've said about 10 times already U2_Guy?;)

I agree Mercy is superb btw

I've got a great solution. Make your own mix of the album...with the tracks you want and the order you want them in. Viola!

Otherwise, we all just have to suck it up.

OSC is a great song. Not every song is going to be fast paced or "rocking", nor should every song on an album be... it's a good break from the rest of the album which is pretty well paced. great song if you ask me.

and mercy is such a bside, i dont even think it's that great. i like summer rain more than mercy, i like lady with the spinning head more than mercy, and i might even like holy joe better than mercy. i dont see what all the hoopla over mercy's about

but i'm just a redneck from connecticut so what do i know?

OSC fits the album perfectly.

The one problem I have with the song is that in chorus, Bono sings " One step closer to knowing."
I don't know why but my mind keeps wanting to hear "One step closer to knowing YOU." (adding the "you" at the end)

Strange eh? I can't figure it out.

I love OSC, it reminds me of their performance of I REMEMBER YOU on the Elevation single.

The only thing I don't like is how low Bono's voice gets when he says "slowing" and "glowing." I can imagine his face like this::eek: or this::shocked: right when that part comes on.

Fits perfectly exactly......god damn beautiful haunting song, the only little gripe I may have is that it is very like The First Time but then again who cares. the guitar in the middle is just brilliant.

There is no comparison between POE and this song. I'm in agreeance with boosterjuice that the song fits the album perfectly.

To me, it's a sign of musical maturity in the minimalism this song has to offer. Knowing when not to play is much harder than beating a song to death. As far as wanting to add YOU at the end...I do believe that the 'as is' is perfect.

More so than being a song about knowing the proverbial 'you' (God/woman/whatever), me thinks the idea of mortality hangs over the song - and how we will only know at the end how it's really gonna be. This notion would go in line with the idea of the passing of his father being the thread that runs through the album.

U2_Guy, I have come to know you as Jick's sidekick, keep up the good work!

This is the only song on the album to have made me cry. Last night. Damn it's an amazing song. I can't remember the last time I cried to a song. I'm not sure if I even have.

This song is exactly what I need right now.

I dunno'...I really like this song a good deal. It struck me right off the bat, on the first listen; maybe it's a bit cumbersome at times, as today's Bono so often is, but it's a very affective piece of music, in my opinion.

Still, I think I can see where U2_Guy is coming from...

Do all of you really not see the same kind of "Christmassy" sound to this song that the later tracks on the last album had? In terms of the production (but NOTHING else!!!), I do think that this song sounds a bit too much like the steaming piles of shit which were both "Peace on Earth" and "Grace." Just try to pay attention to the production, is my advice...maybe I'm crazy, but I do hear it...

This is the one and only song so far that was a grower for me, but once I sat down with lyrics in hand when i had a moment to myself, I realized how beautiful it is
But yes, I myself would have liked Mercy in its place, but as long as Mercy comes out somewhere on the set, I'm happy :D

There has been minimalism in many songs for U2, even since the beginning, so I'm not so sure if maturity is the key for this type of song. It's just a sense of musicianship (is that a word?).

I mean, listen to the bridge into "Into The Heart", listen to "Running To Stand Still", "First Time", "October", etc.

I think "One Step Closer" is beautiful, and fits perfectly where it is.

I couldn't contain myself when I read someone saying that 'Mercy' (if that's truly what it is) is better than 'One Step Closer'. While 'Mercy' is a great, great B side (right up there with 'Lady with the Spinning Head'), it lacks a sustained hook. It would make a great pre-87 track back when U2 had tracks like that...but does not live up to their current standards, though it is brilliant lyrically. 'One Step Closer', however, could very well be the strongest song on the album, and is possibly U2's most couragous and honest song to date. It's the album's centerpiece and its most important song thematically. Daniel Lanois' perfectly orchestrated production shimmers through the track and Bono strips himself bare. Not since The Joshua Tree have we heard Bono this naked, nor U2 this stark. There is really no comparison.

That said, it's really just my opinion, and I am thoroughly enjoying 'Mercy' at the moment....and it would have been a great filler track to make the album a little longer!

Perfectly said. :applaud:

OSC is powerful. As much as I wanted to skip over it craving the juicy OOTS after it, I just couldn't pull myself away from it. Now its become a real solace on the album. It is the State of the Art as far as the music that is available today.

OSC is the one song that really grew quickly on me. At first I wasn't sure. Maybe another Grace I thought (which I hate). But something about it and how it's very Passengeresque that draws me in more and more. I am a little annoyed by the "intersection" part, but other than that, it does have a calm beauty. I still can't get SYCMIOYO to grow much on me. I don't dislike it, but I don't love it. It's the only so-so track on this album for me.

One Step Closer is growing like a Sunflower on steroids! It so fuckin' beautiful! And I know its going to be even better once I hear it off the cd, soundwise.
