New Album Discussion 1 - Songs of..... - Unreasonable guitar album

The friendliest place on the web for anyone that follows U2.
If you have answers, please help by responding to the unanswered posts.
No Mercy is obviously the standout... maybe they're saving it for the new album? who knows.

but for me - as someone who's meh on mercy as it is - the standout is Treason. that's the Dr. Dre produced song that we never heard.
I don't think I've ever heard of this. Interesting.

Also, yeah if Mercy ends up being on a new album, Yay but Yuck at the same time because they probably butchered it. If it's not on a new album, seriously guys. There are times I feel like they make decisions just to piss off their fan base.

The fact that they changed the title of Xanax and Wine to Picture Of You gives me a very slim hope that the renamed Mercy to something else, but none of the song titles really fit.

I'm actually quite happy they are including so many unheard tracks.

For me the biggest disappointment isn't the lack of Mercy - it's rehashing Vertigo Chicago.

Plenty of other good shows they could have chosen on the Vertigo tour.

They retitled Smile as I Don’t Wanna See You Smile because they have another song called Smile on the mythical SOA that Bono played to some reporter and they’re idiots because having the original title play against the negative take in the lyric was very good.

Chicago is disappointing but not surprising considering they pulled the same shit for ATYCLB with Boston.

Mercy is both disappointing and surprising.

Other titles are new songs for the band including “Evidence of Life”, “Luckiest Man In the World”, “Treason”, “Country Mile”, and “Happiness”. Although we do have some notes about "Treason", a song that Bono developed with Dr. Dre and Dave Stewart in 2002, and further developed in studio with U2. Recent activity by Universal Music to take down unauthorized videos of “Smile” and “Mercy” suggest that “Mercy” may be in the box under one of these newer names, in which case, it is unlikely to be the version that leaked in 2004. The 2010 version, released on “Wide Awake in Europe” included the lyric, “If you’re hunger, baby, let me feed it. If your heart is full, baby let me bleed it. And happiness is for, those who don’t really need it, I know you love me too much.” The lyrics to “Mercy” had appeared in the 2004 How to Dismantle an Atomic Bomb deluxe version, and included the line about ‘happiness’ as well, so it is likely it was part of the finished version of the song, cut from the album at the last minute

Their unreleased stuff from this era was previously issued under “Medium, Rare and Remastered” so now we’re gonna get… Overcooked

Just saw this as it popped up on reddit. If only there was a way for U2 to reach out to its fans and subscribers with news proactively. Its just weird.

And no Mercy on a boxset from this era is peak U2. They're just trolling us now.

Leaked conversation:

Bono: Let's give the fans what they want. Mercy would make them happy.

Larry: Was it not you who said "Happiness is for those who don't really need it"?

Bono: ....

Imagine thinking Are You Gonna Wait Forever (which I like) is more crucial to this set than Mercy.

Also odd that Fast Cars isn’t listed, unless it’s going to be tacked on to the proper album as a bonus track again.

If one were foolish enough to have any morsel of hope, the band did stealthily include the extended Invisible as a hidden track at the end of the SOI bonus disc.

Luckily I’m not that foolish.

It looks like U2 is really doing everything to disappoint fans. Another Chicago- release, no Mercy. Maybe they should aks some fans to help them compile a box. Maybe the demos disc has some interesting material, and yes, maybe Happiness is Mercy. Overall I'm not that excited about this box. I'm very excited about the new Cure-album at this point.

Ok this is somewhat promising, but ’m not understanding their reasoning on why it’s “unlikely” to be the leaked version because that quoted lyric?

I think it's more because Universal took it down, which could suggest that it's on the reissue. Honestly, the notion of it being titled "Happiness" seems pretty far fetched to me though. But yeah, they did rename Xanax & Wine so you never know, I guess.

because U2Songs can, at times, just pull shit out of their ass.

this appears to be the case here - as the happiness line is clearly in the leaked version. i just listened to confirm.

and upon a first listen in a while... i still... feel nothing.

With my telescope, I wish I could see further into the future.

I’m more surprised about the lack of other era b sides. I imagine are you gunna wait forever is not the actual b side version? What about neon lights or ave Maria? The live tracks?

I am looking forward to the demos.

You wanna kill me and u want to die
