New Album Discussion 1 - Songs of..... - Unreasonable guitar album

The friendliest place on the web for anyone that follows U2.

Edge had always balanced the catchy riff with a more melodic atmospheric playing.

Once we got Vertigo, which is a hell of a riff. Just fantastic. I remember way back when it came out the song was played on some harder rock stations and the DJ was like....wow...kinda harder stuff from Edge......but back to point, Edge seemed to dive more into this let's try to get a Jimmy Page riff machine, and he's not that level. Edge is in his own world and that's what pulled us all in. He didn't have to be a million notes a second player.

I didn't really like GOYB riff...seemed a little off for some reason. Actually like the song but that riff was not strong enough to carry it. Unlike Disco, really basic yet funky riff that worked.

Now we get piano
'Invisible' is a rare example of Edge balancing a catchy riff with melodic atmospheric playing in recent years. How I wish it had been the opening track on SOI.

He succeeded with more traditional rock guitar riffs during the 'Bomb' era with Vertigo, LAPOE, ABOY and Xanax. He tried again on 'No Line' but the GOYB riff fell flat for me though I also like the song. The riff on SUC was like a weak jam between Zeppelin and Chili Peppers. I love 'Breathe' but the main riff sounds better on the cello later on in the song. Though the riffs failed on NLOTH, there was fortunately a lot of melodic atmospheric playing to be found elsewhere on the album.

Continuing with the riff theme, there have been some superb bass riffs in the last decade (Volcano, Red Flag Day and The Blackout).

Yes, in my alternate version of SOI, I just smack Invisible in the #1 slot and The Crystal Ballroom in the #13 spot.

Vertigo is their biggest hit, probably by a large margin, and the only reason why it isn't obvious is because digital wasn't measured properly at the time.

To go further, Bomb MAY have been their biggest selling album, again - if digital was accounted for properly at the time.

While digital sales were not incorporated into the Hot 100 until 2005 (which reflects Vertigo's low position on that chart), the Hot Digital Songs chart was in place by then, and Vertigo hit #1 on that and went gold.

That said, Beautiful Day also went gold via digital. I'd say the two of them are neck and neck.

Surprisingly, the only two songs that went gold pre-digital are not their U.S. #1s - they are Desire and Discotheque. Coming off The Joshua Tree, Desire was massive.

Bomb stayed at #1 in the UK for a few weeks on the run up to Christmas and is the only U2 album with 2 #1 singles here (Vertigo & Sometimes). Even City charted higher than Elevation and ABOY charted higher than Walk On, all Top 5 hits.

Bomb has obviously not had the longevity of Joshua Tree on the general public consciousness but it did phenomenal numbers in 2004/05. Digital being accounted for properly at the time would have made even more of a difference so it could well have been one of their biggest selling albums.

ATYCLB and HTDAAB are this band's Some Girls and Tattoo You, essentially. Decades on still having a sizable amount of hits including a few worldwide smashes along with massive tours. The records since
Tattoo You was cobbled together mostly from old outtakes and shouldn’t be considered a great or even very good album, despite having a few great tracks. But they’re more connected to the earlier Stones 70s work and don’t feel like a new era.

The more accurate comparison which I’ve drawn numerous times, despite the time lag, is Steel Wheels and Voodoo Lounge, neither of which are fit to hold those two U2 album’s jockstraps..

U2 should release the Sphere film in IMAX. It would be such a missed opportunity to just use it as a movie for the venue. They have two great, successful examples in the Eras Tour and Beyoncé’s Renaissance film that there is a demand out there for fans to see a big tour on the big screen.

The U2 Sphere shows were arguably the most discussed and biggest live events of last year after those two artists - they should follow their lead and release it for a general audience to enjoy without getting on a plane. I know my friends, who aren’t big U2 fans, would be up for seeing it in theaters. But they certainly wouldn’t go to Vegas to do so.

Yeah, just because two of the currently biggest names in music made good money on concert films last year does not mean there is demand from the general public for a U2 one.

Flying for The Killers residency this weekend, so it looks like I'll just miss this one!

Curious to see how this film would translate to the screen though. And 72 minutes means it's just about half of it?

I wonder if they will change the 4 songs to POP songs in the middle of the movie like U2 never did during the 40 shows?

Any hint how much this will cost? I assume it's like a 125-200 dollar ticket?

I think it will probably be released in movie theaters and streaming after the Sphere showings. Very limited audience for Sphere showings.

I would go see it in a movie theater. It was directed by Morleigh and Edge.

No hints yet, although TM has similar info and a seating chart for display. "Screen" is also displayed where the GA floor and 100s area usually are, but I'm not sure how that factors into things.

Edit: Per the email from U2.com just now...

V-U2 tickets will be available to the general public from Friday, August 23 at 10:00AM PT via Ticketmaster.com. Tickets start at $100 and will reflect all-in pricing. (This means the ticket price listed is the full out-of-pocket price inclusive of taxes and fees.)

A "director's cut" of the full show to be released by year-end to streaming, digital and 3D for headsets like Apple Vision Pro would be a sensible and logical thing to do.... so will definitely not happen.

Next year's subscriber's gift maybe? Not the full show though, that would be MADNESS.

Are we thinking that they are literally projection the band itself into the same spot they were at during the show and also playing the visuals on giant screen same exact way as concert as that sounds freaking amazing...

My first htought is that they just weren't selling 100s as some of the seats can't see the full screeen...

The 100s weren't sold for any of the other movies, for whatever it's worth
Yes that's what I figured was the case this time, blocked screeen, yada yada... but maybe they are also adding a screen to the floor somehow and making the band 3D out... maybe we can watch random GA crowds on floor screen!

U2songs reporting that the November HTDAAB box set will indeed include a disc of demos, titled How to Assemble an Atomic Bomb. Can’t wait for HTAAAB

Ok that's awesome. Assuming some of them will be what we've heard already, but I know there is for sure an early version of Original Of The Species floating around from as early as 2000. Maybe we'll get Mercy too!
