i think some of the reason for their static setlists is that there really and truly is a design to them -- they think about the concert as a whole, and how the songs build on one another in a way that i don't see in other bands, so the shows have a beginning, middle, breather, heart of darkness, climax/release, and final resolution, so we all walk away with that freshly fucked feeling.
i guess it's the b-stage "improve" section that really could use a lot more improv. i also don't see why they can't occasionally toss off an extra at the end more often. i've seen them do that ("rain" in boston in 1997 and "40" also in boston in 2015), but they really should do it more. how hard could it be?
