“Songs of Freedom” will be the title of U2’s new album
The final title of U2’s sixteenth studio album has been leaked. “Songs of Freedom” will be released in 2026, and will be the band’s first new material since “Songs of Experience,” which was published on December 1, 2017. The album has been recorded between Dublin and Los Angeles, and has been produced by the trio that has brought U2 the greatest success in their history: Brian Eno, Daniel Lanois, and Steve Lillywhite.
Although they are keeping the “Songs of…” format in the title, we are told that this is not a continuation of the albums “Songs of Innocence” and “Songs of Experience.” The band wanted to take a radical turn and hopes to surprise listeners with a new sound, in which the drumming of Larry Mullen Jr. (who has been present throughout the entire recording process) will be a defining element.
Bono has already spoken about the concept of “Freedom” in an interview published by Esquire.
The cover artwork we’re showing you is one of the previews that Shaughn McGrath has presented to the band, featuring a photograph by Anton Corbijn. It is not yet final.
We should be able to hear some of the material from “Songs of Freedom” before spring 2026, perhaps live, as the band is very eager to return to performing—especially with Larry’s return after his absence from the shows at The Sphere. The plan is to release the first single in the summer and the album between September and November 2026, almost coinciding with the 50th anniversary of the band’s first meeting in Larry’s kitchen.
There will be a song on which Adam Clayton will sing alongside Bono for the first time!
The other big news today is that #U2XRadio (U2’s official radio station) will broadcast the live programmes of #VertigoRadio across the United States and Canada starting next year. This will be the first Spanish-language show for U2 fans on the official station. In addition, The Edge will be one of the first guests on Vertigo Radio in this new phase of the show!
