New Album Discussion 1 - Songs of..... - Unreasonable guitar album

The friendliest place on the web for anyone that follows U2.
If you have answers, please help by responding to the unanswered posts.
By the way, saw this specimen in Cleveland yesterday on road trip-stop w/79-year-old paternal unit (who first became aware of U2 watching Live Aid on TV next to me in a bassinet, in Philly).

Only item I think remaining from the ‘03 special exhibit (which was truly incredible, actually), which was my first and only other time at the RNRHOF (which is much overall worse now on the whole).

God bless Sydney version of “The Fly”.

50th anniversary would be the perfect time for a greatest hits tour of some sort, especially if there's not an album ready, just release a single or EP if you really want to have something new.

I mean, 50 years? It's an open goal really, so surely they would be mad not to....

Queen take top spot, with Bowie, U2, Oasis and Fleetwood Mac forming the top five, PPL data shows.

U2 have been named the third most-played rock act of the 21st century in the UK, according to new data by PPL.
Compiled from radio and television broadcasters, the data reflects cumulative airplay between 2000 and 2024.
Queen led the list with over 400 million seconds of airplay, with their most aired track being ‘A Kind of Magic’. David Bowie ranked second, while U2 came in third, followed by Oasis and Fleetwood Mac.
The figures were released ahead of National Album Day on October 18. Now in its eighth year, the initiative celebrates album culture, with this year’s theme spotlighting rock music.
U2’s latest album, Songs of Surrender, reached number one on the UK Albums Chart in March 2023, becoming their 11th UK number‑one album.
In May, U2 became the first Irish songwriters to receive the Ivors Academy Fellowship, the highest honour given by the UK songwriting institution.

The band have also won the 2025 Guthrie Prize, an award that recognises individuals that use music to confront injustice and inspire action.

Over their career, the band have sold more than 175 million records globally and received numerous accolades, including 22 Grammy Awards and multiple Ivor Novello Awards.

See the full list below:

  1. Queen
  2. David Bowie
  3. U2
  4. Oasis
  5. Fleetwood Mac
  6. Stereophonics
  7. The Rolling Stones
  8. The Police
  9. The Killers
  10. Kings of Leon

I must say I’m shocked. Obviously, the caveat here is “Rock”. Coldplay probs isn’t counted as rock and other forms of music these days are much more popular. Still, #3 is very very impressive

You can kind of reverse engineer a reason for most of those slots. Queen are evergreen on the radio. Bowie may have got a bump since 2016, but still has a massive catalogue of hits. U2 were huge in the first half of the 2000s, I would always hear them on the radio within an hour of tuning in. Oasis would have beaten U2 were it not for Beautiful Day. Most of the top ten can be found on a range of playlists (pop, easy, rock, indie, etc).

The one that really stood out to me was Stereophonics at #6. They were always popular, but I had no idea they were that enduring over a quarter century.

Well tomorrow the headliners for the 2026 gig at Shane Castle is due it be announced, so that could kill off any hope of an early U2 gig, or light a fuse?!

Bummer. It'll probably be at least 9 years without an album. Unthinkable after Experience was released. They have always been an 'albums band' as the complete artform, but in 8 years since, we've heard almost nothing about what they actually want to do here, barring the odd generic comment of 'being part of a guitar revival' 'making a real rock album, 'the sound of four men in a room' etc etc that they've been preaching for 20 years but never delivered.

What now? 'The Edge has hit a rich vein of songwriting'. 'We're lost in the music'. Or more aptly 'we're lost...'.

Part 2 of that podcast with Edge is now up. I’m at a work conference and can’t listen at the moment. I’ll listen when I get the chance to see if he shares any updates.

That, and I'm also surprised Kings of Leon were that big in the UK. The Killers are no surprise (I'd have actually guessed higher than #9) but KoL is interesting. That album "Only By The Night" (Use Somebody, Sex on Fire, Notion, etc) was massive, I just didn't realize it crossed the Atlantic that well.

Looking at their wiki, yeah, they were crushing Brit Awards in that era.

I really doubt whether they are a functional band any longer as far as the recording studio is concerned.
Yea I don't buy this at all.

They're either still working or are slow walking the release of an already finished record to coincide with their 50th anniversary next year.

Pretty much everything we've seen or heard from them fits with this logic.

Where they've failed is the inability to do. I dunno, ANYTHING else while they wait. Drop a few concerts onto streaming. **** they don't even have to be new. I'd love to have the complete ZooTV Sydney or PopMart Mexico City on proper streaming so that I don't have to switch services just to listen to them.

But I'm fairly confident that next year will be a busy one for the U2 group.

Excited to see a paraphrase of this, if anything album-related is in here at all, as I can't listen at work. I'll even take an "I'm really on fire these days" comment; anything.

Croke Park, Aviva Stadium, RDS Arena... Venues in Dublin where you can get to without any trouble, much less than Slane Castle...
Just because they won't play Slane doesn't mean they won't play at all. Of course that is just my wishful thinking, but there are plenty of other, much better venues to play all around Europe...

Just listened to the podcast. A bit of music talk– Live Aid, Songs of Surrender, Achtung Baby, the use of AI in music, etc. Nothing at all about anything new.

At this rate Bono will only have U2 inspired acts and his own quotes to be inspired by. "Whooaaaaaah The Edge is on fire!"

But yes that album was massive in the UK in 2008, all over the radio. That said, only Sex On Fire and Use Somebody were hits here. Nothing else.

Couldn't stand that album to be honest, awful stuff. The older stuff was much better.

the only thing I really remember Kings of Leon for is the godawful opening set they did before U2 in Philly 2005 lol.

Which weirdly people said they sounded too much like U2 on that album....

I used to work at a few interconnected music venues in central Virginia and Kings of Leon had a show booked at the outdoor ~2,300 capacity (baby) amphitheater. Leading up to the show it was pretty evident it wouldn’t sell out unless day-of sales/walk-ups were REALLY strong.

The KoL boys threw a hissy fit and threatened to cancel the show last minute because it didn’t sell out, blaming everyone but themselves, and treated every crew member like **** in the process. I think this was the same tour that the bassist (?) got a mouthful of bird **** in his mouth during a show.

Since 2008 they’ve reissued, on one format or another, virtually everything they’ve ever put out, to varying degrees of fanfare, have they not?
No, Virually, you're a bit right. Where is the POP remaster deluxe? Where are the physical releases for JT30? Where are the released physical HD videos for UABRS, Zootv, Popmart, Elevation, Vertigo and E&I? Where is a LoveTown release? There"s hardly any official HD material from The Unforgettable fire tour. Rattle and Hum could've been celebrated with a deluxe box with deleted scenes.
HTDAAB reissue was big. A bluray with atmos/5.1 mixes/video could have made it legendary.
So, yes, I think U2-fans could have had more regarding to the biggest bands in the world. Especially in times when there's no touring or news from the studio. It takes them ages to get an album finished.
