New Album Discussion 1 - Songs of..... - Unreasonable guitar album

The friendliest place on the web for anyone that follows U2.

I've seen three shows at Nats Park now... Bruce, Strokes/RHCP, Smashing Pumpkins/Green Day.

Sound for Bruce and the Chili Peppers was terrific, Green Day the sound was spotty and there was a small echo.

Only other baseball stadium gigs I saw was Bruce at Shea Stadium in 2002 and Billy Joel at Camden Yards a few years back. Both tremendous.

I don't think there's a legitimate difference in sound quality between baseball and football stadiums. I do get that seats are further away in baseball stadium do to the design of the field. Otherwise I don't mind either.

Agree on the seats being the main issue.

I've been on the field at Wrigley for the same Green Day/Pumpkins tour, Foo Fighters, Dead & Co, GNR, and a few others. Really good! Not meaningfully different than being on the field at a football stadium.

But I've also been in the stands for Bruce, Pearl Jam, and a couple others and that was a worse experience.

U2 can easily do a stadium tour of the US/Canada. Just off the top of my head here's where they could sell out stadiums effortlessly.

NYC x2
Boston x2
Philadelphia
Washington D.C.
Detroit
Chicago x2
Minneapolis
Nashville
Atlanta
Miami
Dallas
Houston
Denver
Phoenix
Las Vegas
Los Angeles x2
San Francisco
Seattle

Vancouver
Edmonton
Winnipeg
Toronto x2
Montreal x2

I’m not so sure. Some of these markets were an easy score in the general sales for JT30… and that was The Joshua Tree.

Granted, the live industry has changed a lot since then. To me, the question isn’t so much “is there pent up demand?”
I think it’s more “are they going to price people out?” The fanbase largely paid more than they ever have for U2 at Sphere (tip of the cap to the $140 300s buyers).

Is the band/management going to bring prices back down to earth for a proper tour? I sure hope so.

Does anyone think u2 will headline a major festival again? I think not doing these sort of events has hindered their ability to attract a younger audience.
I think they could. But first they have to be 'cool' again, so only with a great new album. If they do a festival right now, I don't think the critics would be nice.

Festival set of nothing but angry political songs capped off with Streets and One would be a nice reminder that they weren’t always the giant corporate machine they’ve operated as for the better part of 20 years.

Heck, Bruce got a nice boost from his dismantling of Trump’s America speech.

More of this please.

Doubt Bono will want to upset his big corporate pals by slagging off Trump though. Those Apple sponsorships have to be respected...

In a nutshell what's wrong and uncool about them. It's not Bono cosying up to the likes of Bush and powerful decision makers (which was justified), but rather that icky bandwagon of hob nobbing with toxic corporate billionaires. There's literally no need for him to do so.

I know I got pelters for saying Bono would be at Jeff Bezos's wedding, but the sad fact is it wouldn't have surprised me. The fact that you half expected him to be there says a lot of where they've gone wrong in the public's eye and its ultimately that lack of self awareness, that I doubt will change when it comes to his corporate pals, that has torpedoed the popularity of the band. So it does make me laugh when I hear Bono espouse the merits of 'punk rock' when his companionship and elite level arse licking is the antithesis of that.

Oh, sure. He'd never say anything bad about Trump out of fear of pissing off Tim Apple.

That's a thing that is legitimate.

Yeah and your point is? I can seriously believe that with Bono.
My point is to please refrain from just making stuff up to fit your argument.

Bono has publicly trashed Trump on numerous occasions, on multiple tours. Directly and indirectly.

You want to bash him for other things, by all means. But at the very least be truthful about it.

There are plenty of dodgy politicians, celebrities or all around wealthy people he hasn't bashed to choose from.

The problem is Bono still hob nobs with uber capitalists like Tim Apple and co (read this utterly tragic article and weep, not just because it's the Daily Mail but what it relays from Jared Kushner), the people who are benefiting from an uber capitalist in the White House.

Everything Trump says or does is not for the sake of fascist regime change or whatever, that's just a smokescreen to continue to plunder the economy for the benefit of his wealthy elite mates that Bono associates with.

It takes a stunning lack of self awareness to be at odds with this administration when the very cause of Bono's good work going up up in smoke, are enacted and supported by the same elite that Bono has been sucking up to and sunning up on their yachts with these past number of years.

I despair at the great work Bono put in that now lies in ruins, but I don't pity Bono's personal despair. You lie down with dogs, you get fleas. Bono can get to fuck associating with Murdoch, Tim Apple and the Trump's extended family. Deal with it, distance yourself from them, criticise the entire system that is the catalyst for this or shut the fuck up.

Didn't he say what Trump was doing was "pure evil" in the Zane Lowe interview recently, or something to that effect.

i think the reality is that Bono believes that PEPFAR is actually his biggest accomplishment, and that includes U2, and Bono likely despises Trump but also isn't a such a callow child who thinks that saying "Fuck you Trump" is the best way to actually realize change.

certainly the rise of fascism deserves a sharp response, but as someone who actually knows how the system works and has friends in high places as well as a huge audience, there are smart ways to do this.

I think we're going to see it on next year's tour.

They made American fans sit through scenes from Charlottesville, screamed "I can't breath, I'm an American," plastered their screens with anti gun messaging and brought back a character that compared Trump and other authoritarians to Satan... all on their last tour.

You know, non political statements.
