New Album Discussion 1 - Songs of..... - Unreasonable guitar album

The friendliest place on the web for anyone that follows U2.
If you have answers, please help by responding to the unanswered posts.
I really wouldn’t get too attached to the Brian Eno work when the latest news we had from edge was jacknife Lee recordings

I took Adam’s comments as he really didn’t want to say anything and kindly agreed with the host to move forward.

I still never understood the whole secrecy around the recordings. Like they won’t reach #1 if the music media and world knlw
u2 are recording new music ???
Given historically the worst people to describe their music are the band members themselves, I REALLY don't get the secrecy, playing coy, generic updates, etc.

AND even if they were good at describing the music, it's still not any big reveal until we hear the recorded material anyway. So, it's really a case of why not just say what the status of it all actually is. Even if it's "Yeah, we tried a few times and don't have anything we don't think is crap." what do they have to lose?

does anyone know less about U2's plans than the members of U2 themselves?

I think the creative dynamic of the band has changed considerably. What was once a songwriting process driven by four men in a room jamming turned to "Bono and Edge come up with some ideas that Larry and Adam contribute to," which turned into "Bono and Edge come up with some ideas that Larry and Adam agree to," which has apparently become "Edge writes some material, runs it by Bono to see if he likes it, and then Adam and Larry are on a need-to-know basis."

Kinda makes me wish the delays are because Adam & Larry are hearing the ideas coming from the other two and going "Yeah, we're not doing that." Adam seems to be a little more go-with-the-flow though; but I could totally see Larry saying "You guys waited for me to be healthy to work on this?!"

Good to hear that Larry is back and playing...

As for the rest of it, it sounds like its business as usual... Edge has a bunch of ideas, presumably shares them around for everyone to do their bit, then after a while they get together in the studio to work up the best of them into songs and then see where they go.

So best case would seem to be a lead single and album in Q1 with tour announced for the rest of the year?

Then another 3/4 years before the final hurrah?

Gonna toke up later and write an effort post about how U2 has utterly lost the plot. Ugh they were so fucking good.
You can really hear it in the tempo of their live recordings compared to 20-30 years later. The body slows down.

Mysterious Ways is one that really jumped out at me. Used to have such a funky drum piece and now it’s about as basic of a part anyone can play.

Ultraviolet 360 just rocked. Then on the JT30, and Sphere it slowed way way down.

Obviously they’re not going to play like 25 year olds haha

I'm not so sure if I hear any significant slow down in the tempo, or if that even affects it all that much. U2's songs have never really relied on speed.

Ultraviolet 360 rocked for a few reasons, the first and foremost being Bono really killed it. Taking the second verse up an octave made a major difference. Couple that with the absolute perfect imagery - the laser jacket, the glowing steering wheel mic, Bono literally hanging on as he swung about the stage...it was just pure perfection.

The JT tour, repurposing a breakup song as a celebration of women, just fell flat, perhaps simply because the 360 version set a new standard. The Sphere version, too, surprised me at how basic the visual accompaniment was, and just lacked the energy that 360 had in the vocal. This might be a minor nit to pick, but Bono's fiddled with the melody of the chorus ("baby, baby, baby...") a bit too much for my liking on the Sphere and JT versions. And he needs to double Edge on the "Ultraviolet" line. Little things like that go a long way to elevating a performance from good to great.

Like I said in an earlier post, the 360 tour was the last time I said "holy fuck, that was a religious experience," when seeing the band. They've always been great - even after 360 - but that tour was something else.

I'd heard of a Pop Mart chain of stores in some south eastern asian countries, but didn't know they're found elsewhere in the world: Pop Mart

They should totally do another "Kmart" style promotion for POP's anniversary there, right guys? ;)

I saw one of these in New Zealand last year.

Again confirming the album/tour was ahead of its time.

“The band, it turns out, have recently reconvened in a nearby studio with longtime collaborator Brian Eno to prepare the groundwork for what will be their 16th album. “We’re busy writing another reason to exist as a band,” Bono says. “I still find Brian an extraordinary inspiration and I’m sure he still finds me quite frustrating. But I know he will keep on defending our right to be ecstatic in our music.””
