New Album Discussion 1 - Songs of..... - Unreasonable guitar album

The friendliest place on the web for anyone that follows U2.

We went from having a fuck off guitar record, to something else but we’re just finishing it up with Larry, to we have no idea what we are doing

I haven’t been that impressed with Jack’s production sound with U2. Maybe it’s due to timing with U2 switching over to writing 3 min pop songs
Speaking of Pop songs, in 2 years it'll be the 30th anniversary of the masterpiece known as "Pop". C'mon U2 make it happen, open the vault and give us an anniversary edition with all the goods.

I was downvoted hard on reddit like 8 months ago for saying that I really doubted there was any meaningful work done on any sort of album.

I stand by it.
I thought Adam’s interview on the podcast which aired recently pretty much said as much? There was no commitment to anything other than doing some recording and seeing where they are with things by the end of summer?

My worry with Jacknife Lee is that it's a very safe production choice. To me, he's someone who hangs around them a lot, someone that they're used to, and, as such, someone who is unlikely to have the kind of fresh perspective necessary to push any boundaries.

That's why Danger Mouse was such a brilliant choice; someone from outside the camp, with a pre-existing reputation, who obviously put it up to them to do things differently. I'd love to hear his version of SOI some day, just to know what they lost when they decided to ditch him.

At what point in this current process do they hit the emergency Andrew Watt button?

What else has Jacknife Lee produced for the band? I always thought he just produced boring remixes

Lost in the music, lost in the weeds of the music. Hope to be done soon, nothing finished, no permanent plan ect.. Heard it all for years, don't know why i am surprised. They must think they are immortal.

Jackknife Lee worked on the arrangements for Bono's solo shows - I thought they were excellent, so am optimistic about it from that view.

I'd love to know if there's a cohesive, nearly finished album from the Dangerous sessions. Just to see what we could have had.

Edge's comments are more of the same as Adam's, so I'm not holding my breath about anything new happening anytime soon.

He talks about covid being a very productive time for him songwriting wise with 100 ideas worked up into something... how many years ago was that? How many must he have now? Do these guys never get frustrated about all these things that just never see the light of day?

Yeah, I find it odd he keeps returning to a period of time that was half a decade ago. Makes it sound like it was this past summer.

I do find it a bit uneasy that they haven't really confirmed that Larry is full health. There was a comment about the four of them playing, and sometimes just three.

I would imagine it's hard to find a theme if you're not consistently playing and working together.

My guess is the next update from the band will be they had a theme flushed out and an album was looking pretty close to being finished.....then Trump happened and now their theme needs to be reworked for the age of American Fascism. Which makes a pretty good album title.

Well - if COVID was very productive for them - and knowing that they would want to tour with whatever it is they release - it's not crazy to put the blame on Larry's health as to why it's all sitting on a shelf in Jackknife Lee's basement.

Yeah - I reckon this is as much about validating WHICH ideas are part of that cohesive theme and then just recording them rather than going through a traditional long U2 process of bunkering in a studio to write from scratch.

Too much time is what leads to them reconsidering and second guessing. They’ve probably written, semi recorded and rethought this one album 4 times since 2019

i feel like whatever is "next" is going to be the end phase for them. i'm not saying that's just one album, or even one tour. but i can't see them putting out a new album, touring, and then coming back and spending another 4 years waiting for the next phase - which would put them into their 70s.

so this last phase - the last U2 era if you will - will likely contain multiple "things" and will take place over the next 4-5 years - and by 2030 that's pretty much a wrap.

i think we see two new albums - the new one and the "last" one - whether that's still Songs of Ascent or some version of that we'll see.

we'll probably see one more career spanning compilation/box set that includes some unreleased shit from over the years - probably not full on Tracks style (definetly not full on Tracks 2 style) - but probably closer to The Complete U2 release we saw in 2004 that contained an album of unreleased tracks, or the Reassemble album.

touring - i think we'll see stadiums in Europe right away as a "make good" for Sphere. perhaps some limited stadium shows in the US as well as part of it - but more likely we'll see arenas in the US. i do think they'll return to Sphere with the full band at some point. maybe as a last hurrah type deal - tied to that career spanning compilation i mentioned.

and by Earth 2030 - when there's 3 of us left here at Interference - the band will officially retire.

Imagine telling 2004 interference that the band will outlast almost every active poster

I'm holding out until the end of Interference.
