New Album Discussion 1 - Songs of..... - Unreasonable guitar album

The friendliest place on the web for anyone that follows U2.

I don't even think he's really even that reinventive (not meant in a bad way, but in a sense that there are certain Nick Cave aesthetic fundamentals that don't change) so to speak. But I do think his quality control is virtually unparalleled. Thom Yorke/Radiohead/The Smile, but they're a decade (!) younger.

I’d add The National to that list. 25 years young.

I think it's easier to have your later work considered positively against your older work when you slide under the commercial radar, so to speak.

The sense of nostalgia is bigger when the songs were bigger.

Haven't seen it mentioned here yet, but rumor is U2 might be performing at the FireAid benefit concert for LA on the 30th.
See it rumored a lot but no one's confirmed. TMZ had it but has since removed U2 from their list.

My guess is that The Edge will be there playing with someone else and that they got confused and listed it as U2.

Are we really at a point in our society where we’re that sensitive that one of the most celebrated R&B bands of all time can’t perform at a charity event because their name has “Wind & Fire” in it? Come on, people.

I think there’s some sarcasm going on….i don’t care who plays as long as there’s some good that comes from it

I think perhaps you're the one taking it too seriously. It has nothing to do with being "sensitive", it's just an odd coincidence. Obviously all that matters is that it helps people.

But we're all agreed, Pop is their unacknowledged masterpiece?

Phew.

Every time this comes up, it reminds me of that amazing time to be a U2 fan, especially when the internet wasn't a thing and we'd get news from Propaganda and the weekly/monthly music mags. Post-Lovetown... Night & Day being released... the Propaganda Achtung Baby special... The Fly.. Achtung Baby (I think Radio 1 played tracks from it close to release, maybe it was the day of release and I was at school so left my poor mother with instructions to record a day's worth of radio onto cassettes ... Zoo TV inside... Zoo TV outside... Zooropa... Pop... Passengers.... Pop Mart... Hold Me, Thrill Me Kiss Me... The "End of the World" book which was an amazing record.

What a time to be alive. Zooropa and Pop remain two of my favourite U2 albums. Finished or not, Pop has such an eclectic mix of songs and some of them like Mofo perfect the mix of U2 & "dance" rhythms and beats. There's some other really funky stuff on there too like Miami, Playboy Mansion.

I don't know if its such a favourite era of mine because of how old I was at the time and I lived through it in a bit of an "obsessive teenager" to early-20s way, but nothing has come close to that time for me.

Just as he said in the interview, I never thought I'd see Larry talk about his own family like this. He said the police would come to his house and he thinks his son could have ended up in prison if he didn't get the proper help. He said so many people with dyslexia end up in prison, I didn't even know that.

Larry is doing this to try to help other people, and that is a very good thing.

U2 songs is expecting an announcement of the Bono solo show special in April. I wonder if the Edge and Bono’s little project with Eno might pop up around that?

Sounds like they're getting ready to pop out of their shell. They also said expectations are for a November album release.

Hopefully the Bono piece helps further rehab their image before it hits. Less U2 are tax dodging wankers who spammed their shitty album on everyone's phone, more ya know this band has a hell of a story and some crazy good songs and we should celebrate them more.
