New Album Discussion 1 - Songs of..... - Unreasonable guitar album

The friendliest place on the web for anyone that follows U2.

Man I wish they’d give us some behind the scenes stuff from the studio. It doesn’t need to be fancy. The u2.com clips from 2008 were low effort contributions from the band that made the wait bearable and fun. I know they’re protective of their image and are paranoid about false expectations and leaks - but this isn’t 1990 anymore. It’d be a simple way to engage and acknowledge their dwindling hardcore audience - which at this point are the nutjobs like us

I’d love seeing a proper release of all the other filmed Rattle and Hum footage. The color footage from Sun Devil Stadium that found its way onto YouTube is really good. Just do a “reconstructed” Rattle and Hum.

Random question. I'm currently working from a hotel lobby and over the speakers is Tryin To Throw Your Arms Around The World but it's acoustic, definitely Bono singing, and some harmonica. I've never heard this version. Where is it from?

Interview with Edge came out on the 1st of Jan.

At around the 44:50 mark, he says:

“I have to tell you, we’re working on a lot of new songs. There might be a new u2 song happening very soon, which you’ll hear about. I can’t say any more than that. But we’re in a great place creatively.”

Something about that phrasing makes me think it’s a standalone track, perhaps another movie tie in like ‘Your Song Saved My Life’, rather than the lead single of the next album or anything like that (though I should admit I haven’t listened to the whole thing, maybe in context it makes more sense).

Given all indications are an album is about a year away, and that they’ve been doing more standalone releases the last few years, I imagine it’ll be something like that (if it does happen). Something to help fill in the ever widening gap between albums. Wouldn’t be surprised if we got a couple of ‘Invisible’/‘Atomic City’ style releases, especially if the next album isn’t out until 2026.

Wishful thinking but I hope the re assemble praise has made them reconsider some of the vault gems. You’d think it is hard to rob from a future album by pulling the best things out of the sessions for standalone singles, so maybe them putting out some bangers that they’ve unearthed helps pass the time? All My Life anyone…?

That would be very cool, I’d love to finally have an official release of that track.

But I guess Reassemble was tied into the anniversary release, i.e. there was an ‘excuse’ to put it out there.

I also suspect they’re still keen to escape the idea of being ‘has-been’s’ while we wait for the next album, so any standalone release at this point would more likely be new for that reason? They said in a recent interview something like “the next thing you hear from us will be new music”, which I think was a deliberate point about moving away from anniversary releases.

They supposedly got close to finishing an album last summer, and they have all those side projects on the go right now (the sci fi folk project is only one of several), so they presumably have a fair bit of material they could choose from for a release in this interim period. They could settle on a certain direction, and songs from a project/sound/theme they’ve decided won’t fit on the album (but are still happy enough with) could be used for a standalone release.

I reckon the least cool possibility is it’s some kind of movie tie-in again. Weren’t they recently working on North Star again for a film/documentary?

new music! Excellent. Surely a Paddington in Peru soundtrack tie-in that will return them to the top of the rock n roll echelon

I really enjoyed this interview - Sodajerker is hardly a hard-hitting podcast, but you do glean some useful insights from their chats.

This was particularly interesting for confirming the suspicion that U2 has become primarily the Edge's band. I was quite struck by what he said about bringing much more developed demos to the table: there is far little jamming going on than there was in the first decade or so of the band.

I wonder if this explains Larry's comments about U2 not quite being a democracy any more? If Edge is bringing drum and bass parts to the table, but reluctant to share his topline melody ideas (in deference to Bono), that says a lot about the role of Larry and Adam in 2025.

On the flip side, it was good to hear his energy for the new work they're doing. Fingers crossed they don't over-think everything. I laughed when I heard him say that the lesson of making 'Reassemble' was that short deadlines and quick decisions can make for better creative choices. Hopefully that's a lesson they're taking on board now!

Came across this on the u2 subreddit - I’m not too familiar with U2community (seems to be the official u2.com forum Twitter account?), but they tweeted the following line at the end of December:

“Leave behind you a trail of beauty.
You will always find your way home.”

Anyone know what that’s from? I imagine it’s a reference to something pre-existing, but when I google it the top result is for that twitter post. I know it’s a long shot (why would they tease anything about new material through the u2.com forum twitter account for one thing), but any chance it’s a cryptic hint about the new song Edge mentioned?

True! But then, it was on the official band accounts, and I recall it was a photo of an illustration of Bono’s along with handwritten lyrics?

More convincing than posting something through the fan forum account… but hey, stranger things have happened!
