New Album Discussion 1 - Songs of..... - Unreasonable guitar album

The friendliest place on the web for anyone that follows U2.
If you have answers, please help by responding to the unanswered posts.
i had to look up what their last Hot 100 song was and it's absolutely hilarious and just goes to show you how awful a marketing decision the apple thing was.

Ordinary Love peaked at #84 in March of 2014.

i forget that they only had two #1 songs (WOWY & I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For). i think Vertigo may have been able to be a third of they counted streams and downloads properly at the time, but i guess we'll never know.

I see a lot of good SNL stuff pop up on my TikTok, feels like it's having a resurgence to be honest. I don't watch the show though. Could someone post a link? Not available in Aus.

Paul Mescal mentioned the Apple thing in the opening monologue, in case people are wondering what is the thing the youngs think of first when they think of U2.

Maybe the writers had him mention that because he's Irish, therefore automatic connection somehow to those writers. Irish guy hosting has to mention U2.

That tracks, given the quality of Saturday Night Live's writing.
Yeah, getting a song onto the Alternative Adult chart is about as impressive as getting your movie on the Adult Films chart.
I honestly have no idea where you even listen to these songs on the radio. Are there radio stations devoted to 'alternative adult?' Who else gets played on that station? Imagine Dragons?

I mean I don’t understand why anyone older than 12 and younger than 75 would listen to the radio in this day and age; if you have internet access you can learn as much as you want about music past and present and curate your own listening without some amped-up jackass yelling at you between songs and commercials.

i listen to sirius. don't know when i've listened to the actual radio outside of occasional news and sports.

but we will leave sirius xm on in the house during the day. when i go straight to the streaming apps i tend to end up in an echo chamber of my own preferences vs. ever hearing something from artists i don't typically give the time of day and/or even know about yet - so that's where listening to satellite radio helps.

I had a free trial of Sirius when I bought a car a few months ago. The U2 station was my default when I couldn't find anything else; but I found it was just like terrestrial radio for the most part (minus the ads) where each station latched onto a core pool of songs that they'd spin and unless they were more of a modern pop station or a deep cuts thing, they'd stick to that. I discover a lot more new artists on Spotify now than anywhere else. Between Discover Weekly and the Daylist feature, it's not terrible at taking an educated guess at my tastes (and yes, I'll buy the artist's music if I end up liking a decent quantity of their material since Spotify is the green meanie).

Anyway, all this to say that I think a top-charting radio hit is hardly more than a bragging right and doesn't influence much of anyone outside the "If I'm not listening to what gets played on modern radio, I'm not cool!" crowd; which I feel like is continually dwindling (thank goodness).

Went to see Fontaines DC at the Point (Dublin) last weekend.

The parallels with a young U2 were striking:
- a post-punk Dublin band whose fourth album was made with a new producer and marked a shift to a more sophisticated sound.
- a full house of 15,000 people singing almost every word of every song.
- a band headed for big stadium gigs as the next step.

But the contrasts with contemporary U2 were also very notable:
- Long story short, but Edge might soon realise that another Irish band has already resurrected guitar music and is headed to the top of the world.

If you're not familiar with Fontaines DC, check out Starburster, Modern World, or Favourite from the latest album (Romance) and you'll see what I mean.

The band's lead singer, Grian Chatten, was in the background of the 'Sort of Homecoming' film. I hope some of his songwriting magic rubbed off on U2.

On the subject of radio.. a few months while driving I happened to be listening to a local Southern California radio station that is typically considered “classic rock” and they played The Killers - “Somebody Told Me” and yeahhhhh.
